The Templo Expiatorio in Leon hosted the Guanajuato State Footwear Chamber (CICEG) for a commemorative mass marking 100 years of the footwear industry that defines the city.

“This is a deeply significant evening for our sector, as we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the organized footwear industry,” said Juan Carlos Cashat Usabiaga, President of CICEG.

Cashat expressed gratitude to Jorge Daniel Jimenez Lona, Secretary of Government, who attended the ceremony representing Governor of Guanajuato, Libia Denisse Garcia Munoz Ledo. He acknowledged the State Governments ongoing support for the footwear sector and its initiatives to strengthen competitiveness, employment, and prosperity in Guanajuato.

“Thank you for joining us and for keeping alive the legacy of those who, 100 years ago, had the vision and character to organize our industry,” Cashat told Sergio Padilla Ascencio, grandson of Jose Padilla Moreno, founder and first president of the Leon Footwear Manufacturers Union.

“This celebration belongs to you. But allow me to offer a very special recognition. Today, I want to thank, from the bottom of my heart, the collaborators of our industry,” the CICEG President added.

“To those who every day cut, stitch, assemble, design, pack, sell, innovate, and make it possible for a pair of Mexican shoes to reach thousands of people inside and outside our country. Thank you to you and your families,” Cashat said. “You are the true builders of this history. You are the ones who, generation after generation, have crafted with your hands the shoemaking pride of Leon and Mexico.”

Sunday’s program included a moment to remember the pioneers who established and strengthened the leather and footwear industry in Leon. During the event, the CICEG President provided an overview of the current state of the sector that gives Leon its identity.

“Today, the Mexican industry generates more than 450,000 jobs nationwide through its integrated supply chain and represents much more than just an economic activity. We are an industry with over 400 years of tradition, labor-intensive, and recognized for its entrepreneurial leadership, creativity, and capacity for transformation,” said Cashat.

“Our founders understood something then that remains true today: united we are stronger,” Cashat noted. “This industry possesses something that cannot be imported or copied: resilience, identity, and pride. Leon learned to grow by working. It learned to endure by creating. And it learned to transform every difficulty into an opportunity.”

Cashat addressed the current status and the future of the local industry, which successfully recovered and went over the Covid 19 pandemic crisis.

“Today, Mexican footwear reaches the world with quality, design, technology, and added value, proving that our industry has the capacity to compete globally without losing its essence or identity,” Cashat remarked.

“The best of our industry is yet to come. And we will also build the next 100 years together,” Cashat said in his message commemorating a century of the footwear industry in Leon, Guanajuato.
