In celebration of World Tree Day, Purisima del Rincon became the epicenter of the First Regional Forum for Sustainable Cities and Urban Forestry. The event spotlighted the critical role trees play in regulating climate, preserving water sources, and sustaining life and soil. Symbolically, two oak trees were planted at La Alameda park to mark the occasion.

Running on July 9 and 10, this regional summit brings together state, federal, and international authorities and Officials, including Tree Cities of the World, alongside the Architects College of the State of Guanajuato, the Professional College of Architects of San Francisco del Rincon, environmental specialists, education institutions, civil organizations, and eco-conscious citizens. Every voice is focused on preserving the natural heritage within La Alameda Park.

Opening the forum, Purisima del Rincon Mayor Roberto Garcia Urbano emphasized that investing in urban forestry is a commitment to the municipality’s future and upcoming generations.

“Every tree has a story. Some were planted by our grandparents and are now giants; others are just beginning to grow. This is how the future is built: through small actions that, over time, spark monumental changes,” the Mayor said.

Garcia Urbano noted that over the past five years, the local government has driven reforestation campaigns, restored sustainable public spaces, and launched environmental education programs with the active backing of families, students, business owners, citizen groups, and athletes.

Garcia Urbano announced that the municipality will spearhead the creation of the Municipal Urban Forestry Program, establish progress tracking indicators, strengthen the Sustainable City strategy, and launch the Citizen Urban Forestry Board to integrate the expertise of specialists and civil society.

A comprehensive assessment of both urban and rural trees is currently underway to evaluate their health and boost conservation efforts. The forum seeks active contributions from the Secretary of Water, Environment, and Territorial Planning, IPLANEG, the Mexican Arboriculture Association, universities such as Ibero, Universidad de Guanajuato, and La Salle, as well as architects colleges and civil organizations, according to the Mayor.

Key strategic projects on the horizon include expanding biological corridors, restoring La Alameda Park by reviving its natural spring, and building new green spaces and an entrance portico for the park.

The Mayor noted that between 2021 and 2025, Purisima del Rincon achieved an outstanding 97 percent tree survival rate, managing over 30,000 plant species, planting 2,300 trees in Protected Natural Areas, and conducting reforestation campaigns across 15 communities and neighborhoods.

These achievements earned Purisima del Rincon international recognition as a 2025 Tree City of the World, positioning it among an elite group of Guanajuatense municipalities with this distinction, alongside Leon, Celaya, Irapuato, and Guanajuato City.

Federal Senator Miguel Marquez Marquez praised Purisima del Rincon’s efforts to cement a long-term environmental policy, noting that this international accolade is the direct result of a collaborative alliance between the government and the community.

“It is not just about planting trees, but protecting them to guarantee their survival. This commitment is what positions Purisima as an environmental benchmark today,” the Senator said, while also underscoring the vital link between trees and water, stating that without water, life cannot be sustained.

Congresswoman Maria Isabel Ortiz Mantilla reaffirmed her commitment to strengthening the legal framework needed to shield natural heritage, praising the municipality for driving innovative solutions by uniting specialists, authorities, and civil society.

Representing the Secretary of Water, Environment, and Territorial Planning, Noemi Verenice Magana Ramirez commended the institutional coordination led by the local Government, noting that cross-governmental collaboration strengthens strategies to confront modern environmental challenges.

During the summit, the Municipal Ecology Department hosted an environmental education workshop for schoolchildren focused on native mesquite trees and seed germination, celebrating local biodiversity.

Roberto Garcia Urbano closed with a call to action for citizens, especially children and youth, to become active stewards of the environment.

“I invite you to adopt a tree, learn about our local species, research, and get involved. Let us keep planting trees, but also values, awareness, and hope. The future of Purisima del Rincon is written today, with our hands in the earth and our eyes focused on tomorrow, because Purisima del Rincon transcends through its people,” the Mayor said.
