The Diego Rivera House Museum, preserves legacy of the artist

The venue, in the birthplace of the Guanajuatense muralist, commemorates anniversary with activities for the whole family

Storytelling, a collective mural, and a workshop inspired by one of Diego Rivera’s most emblematic works are part of the program

The Diego Rivera House Museum commemorates 51 years as a space dedicated to preserve and disseminate the life, work and legacy of one of the most recognized Mexican artists of the 20th century, Diego Rivera, born in Guanajuato on December 8, 1886.

The Secretary of Culture of the People’s Government, led by Secretary Lizeth Galvan Cortes, accompanies the celebration of this venue, located in the birthplace of the Guanajuatense muralist and which, throughout five decades, has brought generations of visitors closer to his creative universe and the different stages of a career that transcended the borders of Mexico.

The museum, founded on September 8, 1975, serves as a meeting point with the muralist’s personal and artistic history. Since its opening, the museum has introduced generations of visitors to Rivera’s creative universe and the various stages of a career that transcended the borders of Mexico.

Diego Rivera played a fundamental role in the transformation of Mexican art. His work encompassed easel painting, drawing, and especially muralism, through which he developed large-scale compositions with historical, social, and ideological themes. For the artist, artistic creation was closely linked to life and constituted a form of communication and dialogue with society.

In the 51st anniversary, the museum has prepared a program that seeks to bring children, young people and families closer to the artist’s work through imagination, collective creation and the stories that are part of the identity of Guanajuato.

On Saturdays and Sundays in September, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., “My Sunday Afternoon Dream” will take place. This activity invites participants to create their own reinterpretation of the mural, incorporating their own imagination, context, community, and everyday characters to construct a version of the artwork based on their experiences and environment.

From September 12 to 27, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., museum visitors can join the “Collective Mural: What does the museum and Diego Rivera mean to you?”, a participatory proposal in which, through messages and drawings, children, young people and adults can share their experiences, memories and thoughts related to the museum and the figure of the painter.

As part of the special activities, on Sunday, September 13th at 12:00 pm, the Auditorium of this venue will host Cronopio Teatro with the storytelling performance “Myths, Rites, and Other Cries: Legends of Guanajuato.” Through cardboard puppets, stories, and humor, the company will take the audience on a journey through some of the stories and legends of Guanajuato, from the Presa de la Olla to the Presa de la Purisima, in an activity designed for families to enjoy and learn about the State’s oral traditions.

Fifty-one years after its opening, this museum located on Positos Street maintains its vocation as a space for memory, encounter and learning, where the artist’s work engages with new generations and with an audience that can approach his legacy from different perspectives.

The Diego Rivera House Museum reaffirms its character as a living space of the Guanajuatense culture, where the legacy of one of its most universal artists continues to meet new generations and those who make the museum their own through their own stories, experiences and ways of looking at art.
