In a ceremony that bridged the gap between ancestral faith and modern artistic expression, Mayor of Purisima del Rincon, Roberto Garcia Urbano unveiled six monumental sculptures dedicated to La Judea, a tradition that has defined the soul of Purisima del Rincon for 153 years.
“La Judea is experienced in many dimensions, it is more than a poster, a painting, or a mask; it is history itself,” said Mayor Garcia Urbano. “Today, we unveil these six fiberglass figures representing the iconic characters who lead sin to its extinction.”
From Faith to Cultural Legacy
Located adjacent to the Hermenegildo Bustos State Museum, near the entrance to the local market, the ensemble serves as a permanent testament to a community that transformed its religious devotion into a world-class cultural phenomenon.
Crafted by artist Omar Lopez Aguirre, the six-sculpture installation features:
- The Lead Characters: The Major Devil and Minor Devil, Malchus, and Judas at the center
- The Musical Soul: Two musicians flanking the group, representing the rhythmic heartbeat that guides the procession every Holy Week
Standing at two meters tall, these figures were modeled after the actual actors of the tradition, scaled up to emphasize the “grandeur of a legacy that grows year after year.”
A Living Soul in Every Mask
The Mayor emphasized that while the masks of Purisima are famous worldwide, the sculptures aim to introduce visitors to the entire figure and identity of the characters. “Whoever visits Purisima must understand that behind every mask is a living soul, renewed annually to keep La Judea alive,” said the Mayor.
The unveiling was attended by local citizens, city council members, and most poignantly, children who watched with pride, voicing their aspirations to one day take their place in this centuries-old tradition.
Through this investment of approximately 650,000 pesos, Purisima del Rincon ensures that its “international” cultural strength remains visible to the world long after the Lenten season concludes.
