With the purpose of bringing opera closer to new audiences and generating more accessible and engaging cultural experiences, the Guanajuato Secretary of Culture, through the Roberto Plasencia Saldana Bicentennial Theater, presents Opera Picnic, a proposal that invites you to enjoy opera from a different perspective, outdoors and in a convivial atmosphere.

The program includes three fundamental works by the Italian composer Giacomo Puccini. On Thursday, April 9, Tosca (a 2019 production of the Teatro del Bicentenario) will be screened, an intense drama set in Napoleonic Rome that follows the story of the singer Floria Tosca, her beloved Cavaradossi, and the corrupt police chief Scarpia, in a plot marked by passion, betrayal, and power.

On Friday, April 10, it will be the turn of Madama Butterfly (Production of the Performing Arts Ensemble, 2023), a moving tragedy that tells the story of Cio-Cio-San, a young Japanese geisha who places her love and hope in an American officer, facing the consequences of a relationship marked by cultural distance and abandonment.

Finally, on Saturday, April 11, La Boheme (Teatro del Bicentenario Production, 2012) will be presented, one of the most endearing operas in the repertoire, which portrays the life of a group of artists in bohemian Paris and the love story of Mimi and Rodolfo, marked by precariousness, youth and the fleeting nature of life.

Through video projections of large-scale stage productions, Opera Picnic offers the opportunity to rediscover shows that have marked the recent history of the Teatro del Bicentenario, or to experience this art form for the first time in a more accessible, welcoming, and open format. This initiative breaks with the traditional formality of opera to offer an experience where the public can enjoy the performance in a relaxed environment, even with family or friends.

Beyond the artistic exhibition, Opera Picnic positions itself as a fundamental strategy for audience development and diversification, eliminating barriers to access and fostering a first encounter with opera through freedom, curiosity, and collective enjoyment. In this sense, the activity promotes community engagement, the use of public cultural spaces, and the strengthening of the bond between citizens and high-level artistic expression.
