The Secretary of Health of Guanajuato is innovating in pediatric care with the incorporation of animal-assisted therapy during the Third International Congress of Pediatric Palliative Care, organized by the Leon Pediatric Specialty Hospital.

The Secretary of Health of Guanajuato, Gabriel Cortes Alcala, said that this event was held as part of the commemoration of Palliative Care Day, a meeting that brought together more than 800 people through virtual connection and around 100 attendees in person, to consolidate itself as a space for learning, exchange of experiences and updating to strengthen the comprehensive care of minors.

During the activities held at the Pediatric Specialty Hospital of Leon, specialists shared knowledge and experiences with participants from different regions, including Costa Rica, Venezuela and the Mexican states of Veracruz, Puebla and Oaxaca, extending the reach of this meeting beyond borders.

The congress provided an opportunity to reflect on the importance of providing sensitive, humane, and specialized pediatric care, focused not only on medical needs but also on the emotional well-being of patients and their families.

One of the highlights was the incorporation, for the first time, of animal-assisted therapy, an innovative experience that showed new possibilities for accompanying minors during their care processes.

This intervention allowed us to observe changes in children’s stress levels during a medical check-up or a prolonged hospital stay, demonstrating the value of exploring alternatives that promote calmer and friendlier experiences for patients.

Pediatric palliative care seeks to alleviate suffering and improve the quality of life of children and adolescents with life-threatening or life-limiting illnesses, through comprehensive support that also considers their families.

The participation of professionals from different regions and the inclusion of new support strategies strengthen the exchange of knowledge and open opportunities to continue improving the care of pediatric patients who require specialized care.
