As the national Day of the Dead holiday approaches, Purisima del Rincon remains dedicated to preserve the tradition by supporting local families as they proudly honor their departed loved ones starting October 28. The effort pairs cultural remembrance with environmental stewardship.

The municipal government will accept bags of recyclable materials in exchange for marigold plants this coming Wednesday at 9 am in the Municipal Palace plaza.

The invitation is also open to the general public to decorate the fronts of their homes or businesses with marigolds, particularly in the downtown area along the route of the upcoming Catrinas and Catrines parade.

Local authorities urged citizens to join in creating a seasonal atmosphere so Purisima can transform into a welcoming community for visiting spirits during Day of the Dead.

Juan Carlos Navarrete Rayon, Director of Municipal Public Services, and Elena Ovalle Soto, Coordinator of Municipal Education, reported that invitations will be distributed downtown, though the call extends to the entire municipality.

“We are simultaneously promoting environmental care and raising public awareness about proper household solid waste management,” said Navarrete Rayon.

Participants are invited to bring a large bag of recyclable materials, primarily PET plastic or cardboard, though items such as batteries are also accepted. In return, they will receive a potted marigold plant. The exchange takes place this Wednesday starting at 9:00 a.m. in the Municipal Palace plaza.

Mayor Roberto Garcia Urbano will launch the initiative during its opening minutes. The program plans to distribute 1,000 plants, with the posibility to expand to 1,500 based on local demand.

As part of preparations for the All Saints and All Souls Day celebrations, municipal workers are decorating the first 150 meters of Hermenegildo Bustos Boulevard with 250 to 300 marigolds. As the main gateway to the city, the boulevard aims to offer a festive welcome to both visitors and residents.

For city government preparations, nearly 2,000 marigolds will be distributed to decorate the central kiosk, the main plaza, altars, and various youth, education, and cultural events.

Juan Carlos Navarrete noted that as part of the tradition of honoring the deceased, rural cemeteries and the Northern Cemetery will operate Saturday, Sunday, and Monday from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., while the Central Cemetery will extend its hours from 7:00 a.m. to midnight.

Families are encouraged to enjoy the festivities together, with authorities reminding the public to care for public spaces to keep them in optimal condition for everyone.
