Local producers are preparing an exhibition and sale showcasing a wide variety of artisanal quince and walnut products
For two days, Jalpa de Canovas will host the 8th Walnut and Quince Fair, held this year on August 22 and 23

On August 22 and 23, Jalpa de Canovas, designated as both a Magical Town (Pueblo Magico) and a Best Tourism Village, will welcome the 8th Walnut and Quince Fair 2026. The celebration brings together local gastronomy, tradition, culture, and artisanal products.
Mayor Roberto Garcia Urbano noted that extending the fair to a two-day format comes in response to the success of previous editions and a growing flow of visitors. Garcia Urbano highlighted that this expansion will diversify the event’s offer and generate greater opportunities for the residents of Purisima, particularly local producers, artisans, traditional cooks, and tourism service providers.
The mayor emphasized that Purisima del Rincon continues to prioritize responsible, inclusive, and sustainable events. In addition to attracting visitors, these efforts aim to protect the environment, strengthen local identity, and deliver economic and social benefits to the community.
Mariana Hernandez Cancino Villalobos, Director of Tourism Commercialization—representing the Secretary of Tourism and Identity of the State of Guanajuato, Maria Guadalupe Robles Leon—stated that state authorities have worked continuously to position Guanajuato’s culinary events as benchmark spaces that showcase the authentic identity, flavors, and traditions of each municipality.
Hernandez added that the Walnut and Quince Fair forms an integral part of the Guanajuato Gastronomic Season 2026, boosting tourism promotion for Jalpa de Canovas and Purisima del Rincon through their rich culinary heritage, regional products, and vibrant traditions.
Maria Teresa Torres Franco, a quince producer from “Las 3 Torres” representing quince cajeta makers, along with Jose Israel Martinez Casal (“Mr. Bigotes”) representing local culinary service providers, expressed their gratitude for the event, noting that it serves as a vital platform for promoting and selling regional goods and supporting local small businesses.
Merchants highlighted that for Jalpa de Canovas, the festival provides a unique venue for producers, vendors, and service providers to showcase their work, boost sales, and generate economic growth that directly benefits local families.
For the 2026 edition, organizers aim to surpass the figures from 2025, which saw over 14,500 visitors and an economic impact of 4.24 million pesos. To achieve this goal, 81 service providers will participate, generating an estimated 160 direct jobs and 85 indirect jobs.
Participation from local merchants continues its steady upward trajectory: local vendor representation grew from over 45% in 2024 to more than 65% in 2025, and is expected to exceed 80% in 2026, featuring producers and providers from Jalpa de Canovas and neighboring rural communities.
The festival will host 11 specialized producers of quince and cajeta, who will offer fresh seasonal fruit, quince paste (ate), jellies, traditional fruit-infused beverages, artisanal breads, desserts, and various walnut and quince specialties. Attendees will also enjoy live demonstrations of traditional cajeta making and roasted quince preparation.
Currently, the region boasts around 9.5 hectares dedicated to quince cultivation, yielding an estimated annual production of 30 metric tons.
In response to the fair’s expansion, organizers announced that the festival grounds will extend toward the parish church area and the Luis Cabrera Museum. The venue will feature expanded dining spaces, a dedicated dance area, additional restrooms, and fully accessible facilities designed for older adults and wheelchair users.
Throughout the two-day festival, visitors can enjoy local gastronomy, artisan crafts, live music, dance performances, workshops, video mapping projections, family activities, and guided sightseeing tours.
Guest destinations Calvillo (Aguascalientes) and Comonfort (Guanajuato) will also join the festivities, bringing their own culinary, craft, and cultural showcases to foster regional exchange and joint tourism promotion.
The fair will remain committed to the municipality’s zero-plastic strategy, implementing rigorous waste separation and responsible management practices. Having earned the Guanajuato Sustainable Tourism Seal in 2025, this year’s edition will further strengthen environmental, social, and economic sustainability initiatives.
The Municipal Ecology Department will host a free environmental workshop titled “Sembrando Conciencia” (Sowing Awareness), while accessibility measures will guarantee priority seating and dedicated spaces for seniors and visitors with disabilities.
To ensure a safe, orderly experience for all attendees, a coordinated operation will be deployed involving Public Safety, Traffic and Transport, Civil Protection, Health, Inspections, Municipal Services, and Ecology teams, alongside designated parking zones and specialized mobility routes.
Ultimately, the 8th Walnut and Quince Fair aims to consolidate its position as a flagship cultural festival that preserves traditions, promotes regional gastronomy, and drives local tourism, ensuring its growth translates into tangible economic opportunities for the families of Jalpa de Canovas and Purisima del Rincon.
