“In Guanajuato, we express deep pride in our indigenous peoples and place great value on their roots,” said Governor Libia Dennise Garcia Munoz Ledo, leading the Ceremony for the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples in downtown San Luis de la Paz.

The Chichimeca and Otomi peoples presented the Staff of Command and a flower necklace to Governor Libia Dennise, as a sign that they recognize her as their representative and place their trust in her to safeguard their interests.

This act also symbolizes the willingness of indigenous peoples and the government to work together, recognizing cultural diversity as part of the State’s treasures.

“In the new beginning Guanajuato is experiencing, we also recognize the need to generate development and address your demands and requests, to improve your communities and ensure inclusive access to better opportunities,” said the Governor of the People.

“I want you to know that you have a government here that supports you, listens to you, and is committed to continuing to work for the development of your communities. Furthermore, we want you to play a relevant role in the public life of our State,” said Libia Dennise.

The People’s Government, through the Secretary of Human Rights, reaffirms its recognition of indigenous peoples and the respect for their autonomy, self-determination, and right to define their own destiny.

Governor Libia Dennise Garcia Munoz Ledo presented recognition to the outgoing members of the State Indigenous Council for their work and commitment as spokespersons for Indigenous communities.

In addition to representing Indigenous communities, this Council’s primary function is to serve as a bridge between Indigenous peoples and the People’s Government. Each member is elected by their community through municipal assemblies, following a process that respects their customs and traditions. The Council is currently being renewed for the 2025-2028 term.

The Governor recognized each member of this Council, which served from 2019 to 2025 and was chaired by Ma. Cirila Gallegos Gallegos, a native of Tierra Blanca and the first woman to represent the indigenous communities of Guanajuato.

“I am convinced that there can be no true development without the participation of all voices in Guanajuato,” Libia Dennise emphasized.

At the end of the ceremony, the State Leader enjoyed the region’s traditional cuisine and toured the exhibition of handicrafts and products made by indigenous peoples. The State Dance Encounter was also held on stage.

It was on December 23, 1994, that the UN General Assembly established that August 9th be commemorated as the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. According to the 2012 Catalog of Indigenous Peoples and Communities, Guanajuato has 96 communities in 13 municipalities, home to nearly 75,000 indigenous people.
