A university project that began in a garage now manufactures leather goods for clients around the world. An idea to offer a unique Mexican product has become a salsa brand present in Australia, Canada, and the United States.

The stories of Cinthya Paulina Gonzalez Casamadrid and Kevin Mattingly Romo show that an enterprise can start with few resources, but grow with perseverance, preparation and the right support.

During a new broadcast of Connecting with the People, the People’s Governor, Libia Dennise Garcia Munoz Ledo, invited the people of Guanajuato to trust in their ideas, create their own businesses and take advantage of the tools available to strengthen their income and that of their families.

“In Guanajuato there is a lot of talent, creativity, and a desire to get ahead. What this government is doing is providing the means for people to succeed on their own,” the Governor said.

With the Secretary of Economy, Claudia Cristina Villasenor Aguilar, the Governor spoke with Paulina, owner of Paulina Casamadrid and PC Company Manufacture, and with Kevin, founder of Salsas La Kalaka, two young entrepreneurs who are part of Marca Guanajuato and who already market their products outside of Mexico.

The program was dedicated to the more than ten years of Marca Guanajuato, an emblem that recognizes the origin, quality, identity, and competitiveness of products and services made in the State. Currently, it includes 9,130 companies across all 46 municipalities, of which 3,652 are led by women.

“Perhaps that product you are making at home today will be sold in other parts of the world tomorrow. Dreams can be achieved when you work hard and have support like that which we have in the People’s Government,” said Libia Dennise.

Paulina recalled that her company started as a university project. In its early years, the warehouse was located in her garage, and she worked with small scraps of leather to make her products.

Over time, the project incorporated machinery, processes, production systems, and more talent from Guanajuato. Today, their brand creates bags, wallets, belts, and accessories that combine Italian design with Mexican artisanal tradition.

Through PC Company Manufacture, Paulina develops products for 32 national and international clients and generates work for artisans, tanneries, workshops and specialized companies.

“We started with what we had. Now we have exported to the United States, Colombia, Paris and Australia, and our labels no longer put bear ‘Made in Mexico’; they also bear ‘Made in Guanajuato’,” said Paulina Gonzalez.

Kevin wanted to create a product that could represent Mexico in other countries. This led to the creation of Salsas La Kalaka, a product that combines flavors, different levels of spiciness, and an image inspired by Mexican culture.

“When you start a business, you often feel alone with your ideas. By joining Marca Guanajuato, you meet other people who are going through the same process, you can share experiences, and you feel heard and supported,” Kevin explained.

Currently, his company manufactures 17 types of sauce and markets five varieties under the La Kalaka brand, with the motto: “It’s not just spicy, it’s flavor with attitude.”

The Secretary of Economy explained that Marca Guanajuato is not just a seal placed on a product. It is the gateway to an ecosystem that offers guidance on:

  • Formalizing businesses, certification, training, digitalization, business meetings, connections with buyers, exporting, and access to financing

“We want more people to dare to start their own businesses and to know that they are not alone. Marca Guanajuato is a starting point and provides ongoing support so that a company can go from a small workshop to a trade fair, from there to a national showcase, and then to international markets,” said Cristina Villasenor.

The connections offered by Marca Guanajuato bring local businesses closer to supermarket chains, department stores, and companies in the automotive, agri-food, construction, leather and footwear, textile, chemical, services, and advanced manufacturing sectors with estimated sales that exceed 377.8 million pesos.

To join Marca Guanajuato, companies must:

  • Be located and operate in the State of Guanajuato
  • Have at least three months of operation
  • Have a Federal Taxpayer Registry in Guanajuato
  • Be formally constituted
  • Fill out the online application

Those interested can go to:

  • sde.guanajuato.gob.mx
  • Or visit the offices of the Secretary of Economy in Leon, Irapuato, Celaya and Guanajuato City
  • Or at the liaison offices

At the closing of the program, Libia Dennise insisted that the People’s Government will continue to support those who work, innovate, and wish to build their own source of income.
