“Mining is an economic pillar that contributes 2.05% of the national GDP and 8.6% of the industrial GDP and generates thousands of formal jobs and development opportunities in Guanajuato,” said the Secretary of Economy, Claudia Cristina Villasenor Aguilar, in a reunion with the Board of Directors of the Mexican Mining Chamber (CAMIMEX) representing Governor Libia Dennise Garcia Munoz Ledo.

At the meeting with business leaders, investors, and mining sector executives, dialogue was strengthened and a joint agenda was consolidated to promote the sustainable development of mining in Guanajuato.

In 2023, mining in Guanajuato generated an economic impact of 2.836 billion pesos and employed more than 3,200 workers registered with the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS).
Guanajuato is positioned as the nation’s sixth-largest gold and silver producer, with exploration projects in key municipalities such as Guanajuato, Salamanca, Juventino Rosas, Comonfort, and Dolores Hidalgo.

Also, the main challenges facing the mining industry were addressed, including obtaining permits, ensuring legal certainty, and the need to promote investment and innovation to ensure responsible and sustainable growth. The importance of respecting human dignity and fundamental rights and promoting equality in the sector was also highlighted.
The People’s Government recognized the culture of hard work and honesty that characterizes the miners and reiterated its willingness to maintain a policy of open doors and active listening, with the continued support of the Ministry of Economy.

During the celebration of Miner’s Day, Villasenor Aguilar recognized the effort, discipline and passion of the mining workers, who with their commitment have driven Guanajuato to position itself in 2024 as the eighth national producer of gold, the eleventh in silver and the fifth in sulfur, contributing almost 2 thousand 836 million pesos to the State Gross Domestic Product and ensuring employment for more than 3,200 people.

The historical legacy of mining in Guanajuato commemorated as well as the partnership between the People’s Government and this strategic sector, based on innovation, environmental stewardship, and community well-being.
Finally, the commitment of the State Government to work hand in hand with the miners to consolidate responsible, sustainable, and forward-looking mining was reaffirmed, inviting them to continue united in their effort to preserve this tradition, which represents a fundamental pillar for the region’s economic and social development.
