Purisima is the only municipality in Guanajuato that has a Biological Corridor

Purisima del Rincon obtained the international designation of Tree City 2025 through the Arbor Day Foundation, with validation from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Reforestemos Mexico.
Roberto Garcia Urbano, Mayor of Purisima del Rincon, reported on this recognition during the general affairs of the City Council Session. Garcia Urbano specified that this marks the Municipality’s progress, noting that both his previous and current administrations have shown they are on the right track.
“While we are not at one hundred percent, the important thing is that the need to give life and plant new trees is being addressed; corrections have even been made, such as training the personnel responsible for the care and maintenance of wooded areas,” the Mayor said.
This recognition will be received in May for work carried out from 2021 to 2025, with current evidence of:
- 30,000 trees planted
- 2,300 trees planted in the El Palenque Protected Natural Area (ANP), across 15 communities and neighborhoods with a 97% survival rate for the new trees
Among the areas addressed are Bulevar Del Valle, San Jose de la Presa, El Carmen, and Deportiva Independencia.
Purisima has identified and worked toward the connectivity of 60 biological corridors, with progress made on 19 of them (including Hermenegildo Bustos, Allende, Marquez, Gomez Morin, and Lopez Mateos streets, among other).
Each piece of evidence was evaluated by Tree Cities of the World, which recognizes 283 cities across 24 countries as Tree Cities.
In the State of Guanajuato, Leon, Irapuato, Celaya, and Purisima are featured (the first cities have registered their projects for 5 years, while for Purisima, this is the first time).
“This is an achievement and a we want to congratulate the people of Purisima, as it is a joint effort between society and government; groups, collectives, students, and business owners who have made solid contributions by reforesting and donating tres”, said the Mayor.
Garcia Urbano affirmed and recognized the members of the City Council for making Purisima del Rincon the only municipality in Guanajuato to have a biological corridor, which is the key project for “Tree City” that considers tree care in urban areas.
This project has been developed through an Image Manual, arborization strategies, and staff training.
“We still lack an inventory of everything we have, and it must begin in the near future so as not to stop the work already started,” said Garcia Urbano.
Councilman Benjamin Rodriguez suggested that the Public Services Department could also soon begin the work of protecting ancestral or emblematic trees and thanked the people who voluntarily dedicate themselves to caring for every detail, “as is the case of Don Mario in Las Crucitas and Aurelio Moreno”.
Councilman Salvador Cruz Villegas expressed his satisfaction with the result, stating it is a topic he is passionate about, and insisted on continuing work for the ANP manual, as it is a commitment to continue growing as a green city with a plan, program, and manual.
