The People’s Government, through COFOCE, reaffirms its commitment to economic development by strengthening the export ecosystem of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises

Silao/Gto News

During the first quarter of 2025, Guanajuato exported more than $9.3 billion, equivalent to a 6.61% decrease according to estimates of COFOCE, based on sources like INEGI, Data Mexico, D/B Hoovers and S/P Market Intelligence. This decline is primarily linked to the slowdown in the automotive and auto parts sector, as well as to uncertainty exacerbated by global tariff issues.

However, according to official data of INEGI, exports from Guanajuato in the first quarter of 2025 added up to 7,520 million dollars, positioning Guanajuato as the 7th exporting State of Mexico, with a national participation of 5.6% and an inter annual reduction of -15.9% compared to the same period in the previous year.

Guanajuato has established itself as the State with the largest number of exporting MSMEs in all of Mexico, and stands out because these companies are growing above the national average. Despite the volatility and uncertainty prevailing in international markets, Guanajuato’s MSMEs continue to demonstrate strength and dynamism.

Sectors such as food, crafts, hats, footwear, construction, among other, have registered growth compared to last year, which confirms that Guanajuato is not only a land of large transnational corporations, but also of thousands of micro, small and medium-sized companies that day after day compete in the international market to bring the best of the State to the world.

This dynamism is the result of a firm, long-term economic policy, led by Governor Libia Dennise Garcia Munoz Ledo and supported by the work of COFOCE and the Secretary of Economy, under the People’s Government approach, which promotes MSMEs as an engine of economic development and social well-being.

Sectors with notable growth:

  • Agrofoods: 5% growth, led by products such as broccoli, cauliflower and seeds
  • Leather goods: 28% increase within the fashion sector
  • Handicrafts: 90% increase in products such as ceramics, jewelry and decoration
  • Construction: 16% increase, driven by materials, energy and lighting (↑62%)

Key facts of the export dynamism:

  • 1,448 exporting companies from 35 municipalities, of which 89% are MSMEs
  • Presence in 117 countries, including new markets such as Iraq, Botswana and Iceland

Although sales to the United States fell 9%, its share of exports fell from 86.4% to 83.9%, demonstrating a lower dependence on the North American market.

In addition, exports of fresh produce to Italy are consolidating, especially from the agro-food sector, opening new routes for Guanajuato’s agricultural products to Europe.

On the other hand, Spain is advancing as a new strategic destination, with processes underway to facilitate access for Guanajuatense companies, particularly in the fresh and processed food sector.

Boosting new destinations:

  • Canada achieved 39% growth, with a strong presence in fresh food and transportation equipment
  • Puerto Rico rose to 6th place, with increases of 242% in transportation, 20% in household appliances, and 68% in agricultural products
  • Guatemala ranked 7th, driven by packaging, electrical, footwear, and household appliances

The automotive and auto parts sector registered a 20% decline, contrasting with the sustained and diversified growth of traditional sectors.

In fashion, although there was a general decline of 2%, subsectors such as footwear (↑1%), hats (↑3%) and especially leather goods (↑28%) showed good performance.

COFOCE informed that they will continue promoting competitiveness and international expansion of Guanajuatense companies, with the support of Governor Libia Dennise Garcia Munoz Ledo, who has reiterated her commitment to a comprehensive strategy that transforms people’s lives through foreign trade.
