The government of Guanajuato and the Secretary for Migrants and International Affairs –SMEI-, are ready to receive and serve the migrants of Guanajuato who will visit our State on the occasion of the December holidays.
Juan Hernandez, head of SMEI, said that the instruction that Governor Diego Sinhue Rodriguez Vallejo gave him was that on this important date for our countrymen and their families, any need of the migrant community should be met.
“Last year, we did have a large number of migrants, some experts talk to us about the possibility of between 100 and 120 thousand Guanajuatenses returning to their State that they miss so much. At the Migrant Secretary we are prepared to serve them”, said Hernandez.
He said that most of those who come to see their families will do so by car, bus or plane and are those who have the necessary documentation to re-enter the neighboring country.
And those who cannot, always look for ways to communicate with their loved ones so as not to miss these festivities.
Hernandez said that during this 2022, migrants have sent remittances in historic numbers and December is usually the month that migrants send the most money to their relatives.
“They send this support because they love their relatives very much and they miss their Guanajuato. Here is the American Dream, too!”, said the Secretary.
As for the economic benefit, he said that depending on the number of Guanajuatenses that could come to Guanajuato, it is possible to generate around 850 million pesos, upon their average consumption per capita.
Many countrymen come to hold family parties, celebrate weddings, baptisms and they also do their own expenses when they go out to eat or shop to bring back a souvenir from Guanajuato.
The Secretary of Migrants and International Affairs said that just as many Guanajuatenses are expected to return, also at this time of year many tend to leave, attracted by the magnet of the family that they have on the other side of the border, the salaries and apparently better opportunities, but they risk their lives trying to reach or cross the border.
“Yes I want to give a message of caution and not ruin the beautiful theme of Christmas, think about it, don’t risk it! If you plan to leave undocumented, people are dying in record numbers on the US-Mexico border, in rivers, in deserts, and at the hands of criminals who promise jobs, visas, or to help them find a way in”, warned Hernandez.
Juan Hernandez said that the Government of Guanajuato makes its best effort so that fewer Guanajuatenses have to leave, by creating programs and granting support so that more migrants can open a business or create their micro, small or medium-sized business and provide opportunities for jobs to others in their community and municipality.
The Secretary announced to the migrant community, their families or the general public, a telephone number where SMEI provides direct attention to the countrymen:
