Local Civil Protection Authorities issue urgent warnings to civilians while City Authorities promote recommendations to avoid accidents in open water reservoirs

Purisima del Rincon/Gto News

As the summer season and Easter holidays approach, the Municipality of Purisima del Rincon has launched a critical safety campaign. Authorities are urging residents and tourists to remember that streams, riverbeds, dams, and reservoirs are not swimming areas and represent a maximum risk of death by drowning.

The Hidden Dangers of “Natural” Waters

While families and vacationers often seek these spots for picnics and outdoor recreation, Civil Protection officials emphasize that any location not specifically designed as a swimming pool should be strictly avoided.

These bodies of water hide lethal hazards:

  • Muddy Bottoms: Soft, silty beds can quickly trap and submerge a person at great depths
  • Underwater Vegetation: Thick weeds and debris can entangle swimmers, making escape imposible
  • Zero Visibility: Murky, turbid water disorients swimmers, making rescue efforts extremely difficult

Coordinated Emergency Response

Under the direction of Mayor Roberto Garcia Urbano, the local Civil Protection unit, in coordination with State Civil Protection, the Purisima del Rincon Fire Department, and the National Emergency Commission, is deploying safety banners across all major water bodies in the region.

These signs include critical safety imagery and a direct reminder to report any emergency or risk immediately to 911, the central hub for all emergency response groups.

“Prevention is a collective responsibility. Respecting the warning signs is the most effective way to prevent a tragedy,” officials said.

The municipality concludes its alert with a clear message: #YourLifeHasValue (#TuVidaEsValor). Safety starts with staying out of the water.
