The Secretary of Health of Guanajuato, Gabriel Cortes Alcala, urged the population not to be alarmed by the hantavirus infections that have occurred in other places, outside of Mexico. Because in all 46 municipalities, close and permanent epidemiological surveillance is maintained.
Cortes said that the behavior of Hantavirus, if it is not different from what it normally presents, is hardly contagious between people, although there is a particular strain, known as the Andean strain, that can be transmitted among people, but its contagion is very low.
“Therefore, there is no need to panic; we, as a State, must maintain vigilance. It is our job, and we are doing it, not only for hantavirus, but for any other emerging or re-emerging disease,” said Cortes Alcala.
The Official asked society to be vigilant in ensuring that spaces such as homes are clean, and to go to the doctor or the People’s Health Centers when any symptom appears, whatever it may be, and not to self-medicate.
Cortes Alcala recalled that this is a virus that causes a serious disease transmitted to humans by direct contact with the feces of infected rodents or by inhaling the virus present in their secretions.

– Hantavirus symptoms begin like a severe flu (high fever, intense muscle aches, headache, chills and fatigue) between 1 and 8 weeks after exposure.
– The disease progresses rapidly to severe respiratory problems (cough, shortness of breath, pulmonary edema) requiring urgent hospitalization within 24-48 hours.
The hantavirus outbreak on board the MV Hondius cruise ship, on the route from Ushuaia, Argentina to Cape Verde, has raised health alerts worldwide, and the situation continues to be evaluated by the World Health Organization (WHO).
