Protected Natural areas of Guanajuato: are a safe haven for species that are closely followed by the Government of the People

Guanajuato/Gto News

The Secretary of Water and Environment, in coordination with the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) and the Animal Assistance Center for Wildlife (CASA) of Celaya, released two specimens of American Kestrel (Falco sparverius), a Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo Jamaicensis) and two Northern Opossums (Didelphis virginiana).

Guanajuato has Protected Natural Areas with an appropriate state of conservation so that this type of fauna are released and continue its development in the ecosystems of Guanajuato.

Kestrels inhabit much of the American continent; they can be found perched on wires or along roads and feed on large insects, although in winter they can feed on small mammals such as field mice or lizards.

The red-tailed hawk, after its recovery at the Wildlife Animal Assistance Center, due to a state of hypothermia, is very common to find in this type of habitat, so its adaptation to this ecosystem can be assured.

The northern opossum species has a wide distribution in North America. In Mexico, it can be found throughout the territory. Due to habitat loss, it is frequently seen in garbage dumps or on the ground, victims of road accidents.

Furthermore, their natural enemies include birds of prey, felines, and some canids. That’s why it’s so important to reintroduce them to a habitat where they can find food and shelter.

Thanks to the leadership of the People’s Governor, Libia Dennise Garcia Munoz Ledo, and the teamwork of Federal, State, and Municipal institutions, the releases and reincorporations of wildlife can be consolidated.

Mexican legislation allows mechanisms for those specimens that are secured, rescued, or voluntarily surrendered to be reintroduced into their natural environment.

People are encouraged to report to PROFEPA at:

The illegal trafficking and captivity of animals, in addition to contributing to their extinction, increases the risks of developing animal diseases that are transmitted to humans.
