The Governor of the People, Libia Dennise Garcia Munoz Ledo, led the opening ceremony of the 53rd edition of the International Cervantino Festival (FIC), the most important cultural celebration in Latin America, which will be held from October 10 to 26.

“Welcome to the Festival of the Spirit! Guanajuato welcomes you with open arms!” said Libia Dennise.

This year, the United Kingdom and Veracruz are the guests of honor. Their presence enriches the program with first-class performances, musical, and multidisciplinary offer, strengthening cultural ties between nations and celebrating the spirit of brotherhood that distinguishes the Cervantino Festival.

The 53rd International Cervantino Festival 2025:
- Presents 88 shows
- 140 performances
- 3,458 artists
- From 32 countries
The program includes:
- Music, theater, dance, opera, film, children’s activities, and outdoor performances

The event featured participation from the Secretary of Culture of the Government of Mexico, Claudia Curiel de Icaza, who, after welcoming the audience to the Festival of the Spirit, invited all to enjoy the shows that will be presented for 17 days in Guanajuato.
During the ceremony, the talent of an indigenous Tsotsil woman was recognized: a writer, playwright, actress, and director of theater in indigenous languages. Maestro Petrona de la Cruz Cruz received the Cervantina Prize, our Festival’s highest award.

The family of Huemanzin Rodriguez Mendez also received the Cervantes Medal “In Memoriam” for the legacy of a dear friend of the Festival. With his talent and professionalism, Huemanzin established himself as a benchmark for cultural journalism in Mexico.
Guanajuatense journalist Alfonso Amadeo Ochoa Tapia was also recognized for his lifetime of work dedicated to the media. He was in love with this enchanting city and its characters and legends, which have been an endless inspiration for his books, chronicles, reports, and stories.

Also, the Eugenio Trueba Olivares Medal was awarded to Aurora Cardenas Avila, Director of the Celaya Conservatory of Music and Arts. A source of pride for Celaya, she is a key promoter of academic and artistic projects. This is the first time the Eugenio Trueba Olivares Medal has been awarded to a woman.
“Today is a time for celebration because in culture we also find peacebuilding, because in art, we celebrate the best of human beings. We celebrate that this edition calls us to continue contributing to being the best version of our country,” the Governor expressed.

Present were the British Ambassador to Mexico, Susannah Goshko; the Secretary of Culture, representing the Governor of the State of Veracruz, Maria Xochitl Molina Gonzalez; and the Mayor of Guanajuato, Samantha Smith Gutierrez.
As part of the opening ceremony, officials attended the Fandango Monumental de Veracruz performance, which took place on the stage of the Alhondiga de Granaditas.

Casa Veracruz opens its doors
To continue kicking off the activities for the 53rd edition of the FIC, the Governor of the People, Libia Dennise, inaugurated Casa Veracruz, a space located in the Jardin de San Pedro that brings together the artistic, artisanal, and culinary riches of the guest of honor State.

In its 51 booths, visitors can explore the cultural diversity of Veracruz’s regions through textiles, jewelry, coffee, vanilla, cocoa, and traditional dishes. They can also enjoy performances of music, dance, theater, film, and ancestral rituals that celebrate the creative vitality and historical legacy of Veracruz.
