“In Guanajuato, one-third of tourists come to the State in search of a complete cultural experience,” said the Secretary of Tourism and Identity of the State Government, Maria Guadalupe Robles Leon, at the Fifth Tourism Summit, held for the first time in San Miguel de Allende.

The discussion “Cultural Tourism, the Hallmark of Mexico,” was held at the Summit, where the Secretary emphasized the importance of identity and heritage as drivers of economic and social development for Guanajuato.

According to studies conducted by the SECTURI Tourism Observatory, culture is the main reason for travel for 32% of visitors to Guanajuato.
“Almost 7 million tourists come exclusively for cultural experiences. Last year we closed with 22 million visitors, and it’s clear that culture is at the heart of that figure,” noted the Secretary.
It was noted that Guanajuato has built, over the years, a solid public policy aimed at preserving its traditions and promoting its historical treasures.

“Guanajuato is a State rich in culture, traditions, and history. Mexico was born here: in Dolores Hidalgo, in San Miguel de Allende, in our Capital City. This rich cultural heritage not only distinguishes us, but also allows us to establish ourselves as a unique destination,” said the Secretary to the summit attendees.
Today one of the flagship projects is the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

“In Guanajuato, we are taking this very seriously. We have already formed a committee with the Governor of the People, Libia Dennise Garcia Munoz Ledo, the Secretary of Culture, the National Institute of Anthropology and History, and the Federal Government’s Secretary of Tourism to give it a new boost. It’s something unique, and it’s wonderful to have it in our State,” said the Governor.
Robles Leon also emphasized the importance of regional cooperation to enhance tourism offerings in international markets, explaining, “We are not competitors; we are states that are strengthening ourselves and have understood that we must market ourselves as a great region. Together, we will present in international markets with greater strength.”

The official also noted the international reach of Guanajuato’s gastronomy, strengthened by the “Guanajuato Si Sabe program”.
SECTURI’s mission is to bring the income of tourism to the 46 municipalities, ensuring that each community experiences the fruits of its cultural heritage, art, and innovation to generate development that reaches all communities and people who make their living of tourism in Guanajuato.
