Looking back, 153 years may seem like a fleeting moment, yet they carry a profound history of artisans, musicians and actors who forged the path of our Judea.

These men and women, alongside the tradition’s creator, Hermenegildo Bustos, were honored with tributes at both the local cemetery and the Plaza del Maestro.

“We come here to pay tribute, to seek permission, and to recognize a legacy. Behind the masks and the costumes, those of us present here are filled with pride and identity. Many different people have carried this tradition forward,” said Roberto Garcia Urbano, Mayor of Purisima del Rincon.

“If someone asks who you are, it is enough to say you carry the DNA of La Judea of Purisima del Rincon. They will understand that its not about the individual, but how you breathe life into an identity that transcends time,” said the Mayor.

La Judea serves as a mirror in which the community reflects upon itself each year. In Purisima del Rincon, art is not confined to history books; it spills onto the streets, breathing and living in the present.

Year after year, La Judea stands as the ultimate tribute to Hermenegildo Bustos. As the “Judios” race through the plaza, Bustos’s brushstrokes seem to trace their history in the air once more.

Characters such as the White Judas, the Black Judas, Malchus, Time, the Grand Devil, and the Ranchero emerge to call for unity. They set the rhythm alongside the soldiers and drums, while the wind carries the sound of every lash, marking a new chapter within the story of La Judea.

“Those who have portrayed these characters tell us that the drums and the chirimia announce those who now reside in the Eternal Judea. That is why we say: ‘Their absence is felt, but their heritage and perseverance remain,'” said Garcia Urbano during the commencement of La Judea, held in honor of those who have passed away.
