In order to dignify the access to the National Votive Sanctuary of Christ the King, the Governor of the People, Libia Dennise Garcia Munoz Ledo, delivered the new arch and the rest esplanade built on the ascent to Cerro del Cubilete.

This project will welcome pilgrims, families, and visitors in a safer, more organized environment, befitting the historical significance of the site. The ceremony was held as part of the centennial commemoration of the beginning of the Cristero War in Mexico.

Through the Secretary of Public Works, the construction of the access arch, its lighting, a rest and contemplation esplanade with benches, a cross as a central element, illuminated lecterns, information plaques, cacti and complementary works were delivered.

This project, in which 14 million 200 thousand pesos were invested, will benefit 3.5 million people a year, said the Secretary of Public Works, Juan Pablo Perez Beltran.

The archway’s design echoes the entrance to the Expiatory Hermitage, built on the site of the first Christ the King monument, and marks the beginning of an approximately 800-meter walk to the Sanctuary. The esplanade provides a place to pause, appreciate the mountain views, and enjoy the ascent more comfortably.

“We are very excited to deliver this work because of what Cerro del Cubilete represents for the people of Guanajuato; it is a source of pride, because this Sanctuary is one of the most visited by pilgrims”, said Libia Dennise.

“The design of this arch is very special because it reminds us that the past and the present come together to leave us a better legacy. And this project will boost tourism to this place, the Sanctuary of Christ the King, one of the most important landmarks of Guanajuato and Mexico,” said the Governor.

This ceremony was attended by the Secretary of Government of Guanajuato, Jorge Daniel Jimenez Lona; the Metropolitan Archbishop of Leon, Monsignor Jaime Calderon Calderon; the Mayor of Silao, Melanie Murillo Chavez, and representatives of the Legislative and Judicial Branches.

Later, the Governor of the People participated in the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Cristero Resistance in order to recognize an episode that profoundly marked the history of Guanajuato and Mexico.

The participation of the Governor in this event highlights the memory of the women and men who suffered religious persecution, and reaffirms that freedom of conscience and belief are human rights that must always be protected.
