Leon/Gto News

A phone call demanding money, a threatening in-person encounter, or a scam can put a person or business under pressure. Recognizing the signs and seeking help before making a payment can prevent financial losses and reduce risks.

With this approach, the Secretary of Security and Peace, through the Anti-Extortion Squad, participated in a security meeting with Authorities and representatives of companies of the La Amistad Industrial Park and Toyota Guanajuato.

Approximately 25 people participated in the meeting, including management staff, business representatives, and regional authorities.

Present were representatives of companies like:

  • Yusen, Mosmex, NKPM, Yutaka, Hanwa, G-One, Yachiyo, Yorozu, and Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Guanajuato

Commissioner Angel Castillo Barcenas, head of the Anti-Extortion Squad, explained the characteristics of different methods, including telephone and in-person extortion, as well as virtual kidnapping. Castillo also shared the procedures for responding to a report and the importance of preserving available information and avoiding hasty decisions that could increase the risk.

As part of the CONFIA strategy, from September 26, 2024 to August 31, 2026, the Anti-Extortion Squad received:

  • 2,700 calls
  • 2,117 through 800 TE CUIDO
  • 374 through 089
  • 209 through 911

During that period, the intervention prevented victims from handing over more than 101.4 million pesos to extortionists. This figure does not represent money seized or recovered, but rather assets that remained in the hands of their owners thanks to timely assistance.

In addition Authorities addressed:

  • 360 investigation cases
  • 185 files were generated before the State Attorney General’s Office
  • 88 people were located
  • 131 cases of virtual kidnapping were addressed

In the event of a possible extortion attempt, citizens can:

  • Call 800 TE CUIDO (800 832 8436) for specialized assistance
  • Use 089 to file an anonymous report
  • Call 911 in case of an emergency or immediate risk
  • The Guanajuato Anti-Extortion app is also available
