People are urged to avoid use of fireworks in Patriotic Holidays

Only experienced people should handle fireworks, since they could cause serios injuries if not handled properly

The Secretary of Health of Guanajuato is urging the public to avoid using fireworks this September 15th, reminding them that they are explosives and not toys, and therefore pose a health risk and can cause serious injuries or permanent disability.

During patriotic holidays and celebrations, exposure to these devices increases; therefore, families are urged not to let children or adolescents handle them and, if they are used, to always maintain a safe distance and avoid getting close to the devices.

Firework burns can be deep and require surgery, hospitalization and rehabilitation; in some cases they cause permanent after-effects that limit daily activities such as writing, eating, playing or doing schoolwork, significantly affecting the quality of life.

Among the most frequent injuries are:

• Those to the face and eyes, especially when people approach to observe how a device ignites or try to check it when it apparently did not work; an unexpected detonation can cause serious injuries
• Hearing damage can also occur due to the intensity of the explosions, as well as damage to hands that compromises their functionality; the risk does not only correspond to the person who lights the fireworks, as those who are nearby can also be affected

In the event of a burn:

• It is important to immediately remove the person from the danger zone and go to the nearest hospital for medical evaluation. It is not recommended to apply creams, ointments or home remedies, but rather to follow the instructions of the health personnel

The consequences of a serious injury can also affect mental health, especially in children who face surgeries, hospitalizations and prolonged rehabilitation processes; these experiences can generate emotional impacts derived from the physical after-effects and the recovery process itself.

The Secretary of Health of Guanajuato invites Guanajuatense families to celebrate Independence Day responsibly, prioritizing social interaction and health care. The best way to avoid burns, injuries, or permanent disability is to refrain from using fireworks and stay away from these explosives.
