The Secretary of Culture of Guanajuato presented in a press conference the opera Fidelio, by Ludwig van Beethoven, one of the most important productions of the year, which will be presented at the Roberto Plasencia Saldana Bicentennial Theater, consolidating the State as a key point in the national opera scene.

The Secretary of Culture, Lizeth Galvan Cortes, highlighted the importance of this production both for its artistic value and for its social and collaborative dimension: “Presenting Fidelio is also opening a space for encounter, reflection and shared emotion,” Galvan further emphasized that this production confirms Guanajuato’s place as a national benchmark in opera, thanks to a vision based on alliances and access to culture as a right.

“It is a co-production of the Secretary of Culture of Guanajuato and the Nuevo Leon Secretary of Culture, an alliance that strengthens collaborative work and expands the reach of opera in our country,” said Galvan.

Organizers noted the technical and human scale of the production. Cultural promoter Jose Wolffer explained that each performance involves the participation of approximately 300 people per venue, including technical, creative, and artistic teams, which demonstrates the complexity and level of this theatrical production.

Musical director Jose Arean addressed the value and demands of Beethoven’s score, as well as the enduring relevance of the themes that run through the play, such as freedom and justice, which, he said, continue to resonate today.

“Beethoven’s symphonic language is very firm and reflected in this work where the orchestra is not a simple accompaniment, here Beethoven proposes a new model that, finally, establishes a new line where the symbolic and emotional level of the orchestra is much deeper and much more complex, and without realizing it you are following what is on the stage but there is another emotional message,” said Wolffer.

Guanajuatense Tenor Alejandro Yepez shared his honor at being part of this production alongside internationally renowned figures, emphasizing the importance of creating opportunities for local artists to showcase their talent on high-caliber stages. He also spoke about his character, Jaquino, and the emotional depth he brings to the story.

Ramon Vargas, who leads the cast shared his experience debuting in the role of Florestan. The artist reflected on the depth of the work, Beethoven’s visionary role in creating strong female characters, and the importance of bringing music to new generations through meaningful experiences.

“I’ve performed in many operas in my life; I’ve done about 70, and to begin with, it was a very particular repertoire because Beethoven was a great musician but not a great vocalist; but in this opera, he gave it all. Returning to this theater is wonderful, I say that sincerely, it’s an iconic theater in Mexico. The Palace of Fine Arts, for all that it represents, the Nezahualcoyotl Hall, which is a concert hall, and this theater, it’s not only beautiful, it has a specific function, it’s in a wonderful location.”

Fidelio is presented on May 6 and 8 at the Roberto Plasencia Saldana Bicentennial Theater.
