The community of Magallanes, in Penjamo, is a fertile land where inhabitants produce mangoes. And, with the idea of sharing this delicious fruit, the inhabitants organize themselves and invite families to enjoy a variety of mango snacks on the 4th. Edition of the “Mango Festival”, on July 13 and 14.

Francisco Javier Valverde Polin, Director of Tourism Development of the Secretary of Tourism of the State of Guanajuato, representing Juan Jose Alvarez Brunel, Secretary of Tourism, with members of the Civil Association Pobladores Unidos por Magallanes, gave the details of this Festival which they hope will surpass the attendance of the 2023 edition, which registered 23 thousand people.

Annually, in Magallanes, 120 tons of Creole mango are produced per plot on 10 hectares. Since the Pre-Hispanic Era, reported Camilo Troncoso, Treasurer of the Committee of the Civil Association Pobladores Unidos por Magallanes, mangoes have existed in the area. Since then, it was very common for visitors to come to Magallanes, in the rainy season, to buy mangoes.

Currently, he said, “we take advantage of that influx to improve the local economy. Currently, the people who benefit from the mango harvest are 132 orchard owners, not exclusive to mango, they also harvest guava, tejocote, apple, coffee and agave,” said Camilo.

Thanks to this tropical and abundant fruit that grows in a microclimate of Magallanes, Guanajuato residents and tourists will enjoy traditional gastronomy and will be able to purchase quality crafts in this Festival that also offers a space for families to go on horseback rides, guided walks, and learn in workshops and conferences, while listening to live music and appreciating folkloric ballet.

The program of the event, with free access, will be enriched with a “callejoneada” through the Magallanes alleys accompanied by the Estudiantina de Guanajuato and the grandson of “The King”: Luis Alfredo Jimenez.

“After the 3rd. festival, in 2019, the festival was not held. This year, Magallanes resumed the event, promoted by SECTUR Guanajuato, and is ready for the 4th. When you arrive at the town of Magallanes you appreciate such a special climate, it is like a jungle with many fruit trees, coffee and agave,” Valverde Polin insisted.

All this production -without pest problems- is enjoyed by visitors from Leon, Irapuato, Abasolo, Celaya, as well as Queretaro, Michoacan, and Jalisco, and migrants when they visit their beautiful town.

The General Director of Tourism Development also invited the general population to take advantage of their stay and visit the attractions of Penjamo including the Plazuelas Archaeological Zone.
