The Governor of Guanajuato, Diego Sinhue Rodriguez Vallejo, inaugurated the 50th edition of the International Cervantino Festival, the most important performing arts festival in Ibero-America and one of the four most important art festivals in the world.
This year, Korea and Mexico City are the guests of honor, from October 12 to 30 the country and the city will show the world the best of their artistic and cultural manifestations.
“Today we begin a new journey that will multiply sensations, fraternity, culture and peace for another 50 years, without a doubt. Today the International Cervantino Festival is more alive and stronger than ever”, said Rodriguez Vallejo.
“Here in the State where Mexico was born; freedom and culture will continue to give identity and unity to our country; because the Cervantino International Festival is part of the cultural heritage of Guanajuato, Mexico and the world”, said the Governor.
During the 19 days of the Festival of the Spirit, more than 2,500 artists from 33 countries will show the world the best of artistic and cultural expressions in 159 performances of performing arts and 90 activities.
This most important cultural gathering in the country will be the stage for Mexico City to share, for the first time in history, its wide and varied artistic and cultural treasure.
With more than 200 presentations by more than 60 companies and more than 1,300 artists, Mexico City will present a wide mosaic of representative expressions of Mexico City during the FIC.
Disciplines such as theatre, dance, music, cabaret, circus, multidisciplines, street performances, exhibitions, urban interventions, musical and poetic assaults, academic conferences, book presentations, film cycles and wrestling will be presented, they represent the sociocultural treasure of Mexico City.
“Welcome Mexico City, with all the strength of its plurality, which is proudly the capital of all Mexicans, and with all its great cultural and artistic legacy,” said the Governor.
In 2022, Mexico and the Republic of Korea have much to celebrate, hence their presence at the FIC, as Mexico and Korea celebrate 60 years of bilateral relations; they also celebrate 10 years of the creation of the Korean Cultural Center in Mexico; and the 30th anniversary of Sister Cities by the metropolitan government of Seoul with Mexico City, both guests of honor of this Cervantes Festival.
Korea will present some 50 Visual Arts, Film Series and Performing Arts activities.
“It is a great opportunity to discover the art and culture of this young nation and strengthen the bonds of friendship that unite us,” said the Governor.
During the first day of FIC activities, the Cervantes Prize was awarded to Isidro “Chilo” Guerrero Aguilera, who with 47 years of service and recently retired, for almost five decades was a technician at the Juarez Theater.
This award recognizes the artistic value of national and international creators with special meaning and contribution to the cultural sector.
Also, awards were granted to journalists for their career during the 50 editions of the FIC; it was received by Rosa Maria Munoz Soto and Hector Rodriguez Colmenero “El Chaplin”.
The Governor of Guanajuato, inaugurated the Chilanga House, where the Estanquillo Museum presents images from the art collection of Carlos Monsivais, with the graphic design of Alejandro Magallanes.
“Mexico City has generously opened to share the ‘chilango pride’ and its enormous cultural heritage”, said the Governor.
In the Alhondiga de Granaditas, the main stage of the FIC, the Festival of the Spirit began with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Mexico City, which stimulated the senses with a melodic repertoire under the baton of Scott Yoo, supported by the voices of the sopranos Hera Hyesang Park from the Republic of Korea and Maria Katzarava from Mexico City.
