The result of more than 10 years of work collecting testimonials from women who refused to become mothers, the Oaxacan photographer Judith Romero presented the exhibition “‘Sin hijxs’ (Without children). 20 responses.”

The exhibition, with more than 70 images, produced with the support of the National Center for the Arts, is part of the programming prepared by the State Institute of Culture on the occasion of International Women’s Day and was inaugurated by the artist and Laura Corvera Galván, director of Training and Research at the IEC.

“Without children. 20 responses” refers to the twenty women who shared their testimony with Judith Romero. The objective, according to the author, is for society to recognize the voice of those who decided to break with the social and cultural paradigms that a woman has.

The women who participated in this project are not only Mexican. There are also Brazilian, Argentinian, Chilean, Polish and French women, as well as an American and Judiht Romero herself.

“Each image has a meaning, but it is important to highlight the testimonies, because the visual work was built from them, which is the result of the experiences of 19 women and my own story”, said the photographer.

The photographs that make up the exhibition curated by Ryan Lozano are portraits of the protagonists, the spaces they inhabit and their personal objects that reveal their decisions, passions, memories, desires and specific ways of understanding the world.

There are also written and video-recorded testimonies in which meeting points reverberate:

  • Childhood, loneliness, religion, social norms, care, the right to control over one’s own body, family relationships, and independence

Judith Romero is a photographer and editorial designer. She was born in Veracruz, but has lived and worked in Oaxaca since the nineties.  Some of her themes are the body, identities and political decisions that women face with social mandates.

“Without children. 20 Responses”, by Judith Romero, is open to the public until April 30 at the Guanajuato Arts Center at Revolucion Avenue 204, Salamanca, Downtown).
