Guanajuato registers an increase in species present in the Natural Protected Areas (NPA) of the State, as a result of wildlife monitoring done by forest rangers.

The faunal diversity of Guanajuato has been documented through the books ‘Birds, Mammals, Amphibians and Reptiles of the Natural Protected Areas of the State of Guanajuato’, a document carried made by the Ministry of the Environment and Territorial Planning (SMAOT) to inform Guanajuatenses about the diversity of fauna present in the State.

The book was announced by the head of SMAOT, Maria Isabel Ortiz Mantilla during the launch of the latest edition of the fauna books in which the increase in the number of species present is recorded: from 515 to 558;  a total of 43 more, (21 birds, 4 mammals, 6 amphibians and 12 reptiles).

Ortiz Mantilla said that in the coming years, protection of fauna will become an essential issue for our survival.

Some of the species registered in the update are:

  • Coastal barking frog (Craugastor occidentalis); Small -eared tree frog, (Rheohyla miotympanum); Dragoncito of the Sierra Madre Oriental Norte, (Abronia taeniata); Hidalgo Nose Snake, (Ficimia hardyi); Mesoamerican Moustached Bat, (Pteronotus mesoamericanus); Pectoral Knot, (Calidris melanotos); Bat Falcon, (Falco rufigularis) and Cinnamon Cap Scraper (Atlapetes pileatus); among the 43 new registrations.

The first edition of the books was in 2018, and until now work has been done on wildlife monitoring continuously in all state NPAs.
