In a profound cultural exchange, the municipality of Santa Catarina recently became the stage for a historic encounter.
Celebrating 153 years of heritage, the iconic tradition of La Judea from Purisima del Rincon traveled to Santa Catarina to showcase the identity and artistry that have earned it international acclaim.
This past Saturday evening, the streets of Santa Catarina were transformed into a living theater. More than 180 actors took over the natural urban landscape, blending local customs with the visiting legacy of Hermenegildo Bustos, the 19th century artist who founded this tradition.
The event, organized by the Patronato de La Judea, offered a condensed but powerful display of Purisima del Rincon’s cultural soul. Joining the procession were the Robenos, local performers from Santa Catarina who, like the visitors, portray the pursuit of sin and redemption during Holy Week. Together, they marched to the rhythm of a community that deeply values its roots.
The performance highlighted key biblical scenes, including the sentencing of Jesus and the dramatic pursuit of Judas. The latter serves as a central symbol in the tradition: the hanging of Judas represents the community’s symbolic cleansing from sin.
Rogelio Moya Cabrera, Mayor of Santa Catarina, alongside members of the City Council, formally welcomed the delegation. The exchange marked a milestone in regional cooperation and cultural preservation.
Gerardo Reyes, Director of the House of Culture in Purisima del Rincon, expressed his gratitude for the warm hospitality on behalf of his municipality.
To further strengthen these ties, Reyes extended an invitation for the mask-makers and Robenos of Santa Catarina to visit Purisima del Rincon, ensuring that this dialogue of traditions continues to flourish.
