Jalpa de Canovas, an emblematic community of Purisima del Rincon and recognized as a Magic Town in 2012, was selected by the World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) as one of the five destinations in the world that will participate in the innovative international collaboration program “Best Tourism Villages” for the development of sustainable rural tourism.

This selection is a consequence of Jalpa de Canovas obtaining the “Best Tourism Villages” distinction by the World Tourism Organization in 2023, following an intensive process carried out by the federal Sectur, the State SECTURI, and the Municipality to showcase its innovative and sustainable practices in tourism development.

This program, led by UN Tourism and the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences (HSLU) in Switzerland, is part of the new Bachelor of Science in International Sustainable Tourism, a program of international scope that aims to train leaders for sustainable tourism transformation through practical studies in model rural villages.
In addition to Jalpa de Canovas, the other selected communities are:
- Huangling, China
- Misfat Al Abriyeen, Oman
- Nkotsi, Rwanda
- Valeni, Moldova

These communities will serve as case studies for students and researchers who will analyze their tourism development model, sustainability, governance, and value chain, with the goal of generating recommendations to promote their responsible growth.

Through this collaboration, promoted by the Secretary of Tourism and Identity, headed by Guadalupe Robles Leon, Jalpa de Canovas will receive a comprehensive assessment of the state of rural tourism, and plans for improvement and innovation focused on social, environmental, and economic sustainability will be presented; Jalpa de Canovas will also gain greater international prestige as a responsible tourism destination and access to global cooperation networks, strategic alliances, and future support programs.

This project aligns with the actions already implemented in the municipality through the central axis of SECTURI in the People’s Government led by Libia Dennise Garcia Munoz Ledo, such as zero-plastic events, social inclusion, training for good hosts, and links with universities.

Mayor of Purisima del Rincon, Roberto Garcia Urbano made an institutional commitment to position Jalpa as an exemplary destination.

With this new step, Jalpa de Canovas consolidates its role as a pioneer of new global sustainable tourism and advances the transformation of rural tourist destinations.
Guanajuato, once again, demonstrates that working together in tourism with identity and commitment is key to building a sustainable future and improving people’s lives.

What’s next:
- May 2025: Students and researchers begin fieldwork
