The Secretary of Health of Guanajuato launched this Monday the 2026-2027 winter vaccination campaign, with the goal of administering more than 1.7 million doses of influenza and COVID vaccines.

The vaccination campaign will begin by administering doses to healthcare personnel, followed by the general population and vulnerable groups. The Guanajuato State Public Health Institute (ISAPEG) aims to administer 1,009,806 doses of the influenza vaccine and 713,999 doses of the COVID 19 vaccine.

It is primarily aimed at children aged 6 to 59 months, adults aged 60 and over, pregnant women, healthcare personnel, and people with comorbidities, who have higher priority to receive these vaccines.
To facilitate access to preventive services, 377 vaccination points will be set up in strategic locations throughout the State.

The Secretary of Health of Guanajuato, Gabriel Cortes Alcala, reported that this campaign will run from October 2026 to April 2027, as part of the preventive actions to reduce serious respiratory illnesses during the winter season.
Cortes said that Health personnel will be the first group to receive the influenza vaccine, as they are the first responders and must be protected to provide timely care during the season.
“Ideally, the health personnel should be at 100 percent capacity when the campaign targeting the general public and vulnerable groups begins, in order to prevent serious respiratory illnesses,” said Cortes.

The Secretary said that vaccines are a fundamental prevention tool, because although they do not necessarily prevent a person from getting sick, they do help reduce the risk of developing complications and serious consequences.
Cortes explained that, after the vaccination of health personnel, vulnerable groups will be incorporated, and will receive protection against influenza and COVID, according to the dates and provisions established for this winter season.

The Secretary of Health noted that between 2025 and 2026 there was a 42 percent decrease in COVID cases, and a 79 percent decrease in deaths associated with this disease.
Cortes said that, although fewer deaths are currently being recorded, COVID continues to represent a factor that can aggravate other illnesses.
Regarding influenza, Cortes reported that the behavior remained similar to the previous year, with around 250 cases registered; however, deaths continue to occur, so he called for vigilance.
