SSG promptly attends to 86,000 cases of gastrointestinal infections this year across the 46 municipalities. The warning is to be alert during the dog days of summer

Guanajuato/Gto News

The Secretary of Health of Guanajuato is calling for the reinforcement of preventive measures related to the handling, preservation and proper preparation of food, in order to reduce the risk of gastrointestinal diseases.

During the dog days of summer, food spoils more quickly; this is a climatic phenomenon where there is a significant increase in temperatures due to minimum cloud cover and greater solar radiation.

The Secretary of Health of Guanajuato, Gabriel Cortes Alcala, explained that high temperatures accelerate the reproduction of bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms that, when ingested, can cause gastrointestinal infections that affect people’s health.

So far this year, the Secretary of Health of Guanajuato has treated 86,437 patients for gastrointestinal diseases.

These diseases can be prevented through simple hygiene practices and proper food preservation, so he urged families in Guanajuato not to lower their guard during this hot season.

Among the main preventive measures, the Secretary recommended:

  • Wash hands with soap and water before preparing food and after using the toilet
  • Properly disinfect fruits and vegetables before consuming them
  • Keep foods refrigerated
  • Avoid leaving foods exposed to room temperature for extended periods
  • Consume only potable, boiled or disinfected water
  • Thoroughly cook meats, fish and seafood to eliminate microorganisms that can cause disease
  • Avoid consuming foods that show changes in their smell, color or texture
  • Separate raw foods from prepared foods to prevent cross-contamination
  • Check expiration dates and storage conditions of products before consuming them

If you experience symptoms such as persistent diarrhea, vomiting, fever, or signs of dehydration, it is essential to avoid self-medication and promptly visit the nearest People’s Health Center to receive medical attention and prevent complications.

The Secretary of Health of Guanajuato reiterates that taking care of the proper preservation of food and consuming safe water are hygiene habits that contribute to protect the health and well-being of Guanajuatense families.
