34 works by 15 artists will embark on a new journey to the Netherlands, thanks to a Mexican buyer who seeks to promote the Mexican art

Some stories begin with a brushstroke and end up crossing borders. The talent of Guanajuatense artists is finding new ways to reach the world.

As part of the effort to strengthen the internationalization of the State’s productive and creative sectors, 34 works by 15 Mexican artists will travel to the Netherlands, 10 of those artists are Guanajuatense creators, mostly from Guanajuato City.

Behind this project lies a story of identity and pride in Mexico. The buyer, a Mexican businesswoman based in the Netherlands, seeks to promote Mexican art through her company, Careva, leveraging her experience in trade and import, as well as the track record she has built working with global brands.

“I approached COFOCE, I told them about my project. I said I already had my artists and the artworks, and we were about to begin the buying and selling process, but I didn’t know how to get the artworks there. So they stepped in, advised me, and gave me options, a, b and c, all very flexible, even with different schedules, etc. They were especially helpful in addressing issues and obstacles from the Netherlands, and they’ve supported me through all of that,” said Marisol Castano Lara, founder of Careva.

Thus, a work born from the talent of an artist from Guanajuato can find a new home on the other side of the world, demonstrating that art can also become a gateway for Guanajuato to international markets.

This initiative is part of the vision of the People’s Government, led by Governor  Libia Dennise Garcia Munoz Ledo, to create conditions for people and businesses in Guanajuato to find new opportunities, strengthen their capabilities, and take products made in the State to new markets.

As part of this project, a meeting was held between the participating artists and the buyer at the Dieguino Museum, with the support of the Municipality of Guanajuato.

The meeting allowed artists and the buyer to meet in person and, at the same time, for the creators to learn firsthand about fundamental aspects of taking their works beyond borders, such as export processes for works of art, logistics, packaging, as well as recommendations for addressing future international business opportunities.

“I have felt supported in the sense that it has been easy for me to receive the institutions or whatever is needed to make it happen, and in a simple way, it is that it facilitates us to do it, it has been a good experience, one of the first that I have sending abroad and well, it has helped me a lot to motivate me to continue doing it,” said Mauricio Benitez, an artist from Guanajuato.

COFOCE provides support in this project with advice and monitoring on foreign trade issues, as well as legal and logistics experts.

Because exporting doesn’t just mean sending a product to another country. It means opening a door, telling a story, and letting someone, on the other side of the world, discover what Guanajuato is able to create.
