Guanajuato remains in second-to-last place nationally in the number of measles cases, with 10 cases registered during 2026, according to the General Direction of Epidemiology.
Health Secretary Gabriel Cortes Alcala reported that eight cases had been recorded up to March; one more was confirmed in April, and the tenth was registered in September. All those affected recovered satisfactorily and without complications.
Cortes emphasized that this result is due to the ongoing work of epidemiological surveillance, prevention and vaccination, as well as the participation of families who have come to health units to start or complete their vaccination schedules.
“Each vaccine represents an opportunity to protect a girl, a boy, a family, and our entire community. The participation of the people has been fundamental in strengthening protection against measles,” said Cortes Alcala.
As of the first week of August 2026, the institutions that make up the Health sector of Guanajuato applied 894,852 doses of the SR and MMR vaccines: 650,186 corresponded to SR and 244,665 to MMR.
The MMR vaccine protects against measles, rubella, and mumps. In addition, the measles “zero dose” vaccination program continues for children aged 6 to 11 months, and vaccination schedules are being updated for children aged 1 to 9 years.
The goal is to achieve up to 95% coverage with the MMR vaccine. Therefore, the Secretary of Health urges mothers, fathers, and guardians to check their National Health Cards and visit the Community Health Centers, where vaccination is free.
