The Secretary of Health of Guanajuato is the best ranked in Mexico in vaccination programs for children under 6 years old

Guanajuato/Gto News

The Guanajuato Health Secretary reports that the State ranks first nationally in vaccination programs for the under 6-year-old population, as a result of the implementation of high immunization coverage in this sector of the population.

The health secretary of Guanajuato, Gabriel Cortes Alcala, said that vaccination is one of the most effective strategies to prevent diseases and protect life, especially in girls and boys.

Therefore, in Guanajuato, the Universal Vaccination Program remains a priority public policy that guarantees free access to biologicals and strengthens prevention throughout the State.

Thanks to a broad network of health services and coordinated work between institutions, Guanajuato has managed to maintain relevant coverage and position itself among the top ranked nationally.

In 2025, significant progress was made in various biologics:

  • BCG with 85 percent
  • Hexavalent with 88 percent
  • Pneumococcal with 89 percent
  • MMR second dose with 95 percent
  • DPT in 4-year-old girls and boys with 100 percent coverage

These results place Guanajuato in third place nationally in vaccination in children under one year old, second place in complete schemes at one year old and first place nationally in vaccination at 6 years old.

To achieve these goals, the State has a solid network made up of:

  • 632 medical units
  • 53 mobile units
  • 1,132 vaccinators distributed throughout the State territory

This is complemented by key strategies such as intensifying actions in municipalities with low coverage, actively searching for children with incomplete vaccination schedules, vaccination brigades in communities and schools, as well as inter-institutional coordination through the State Vaccination Council.

During the most recent winter season, Guanajuato also stood out in seasonal campaigns by administering more than 1.5 million doses against influenza and Covid 19, prioritizing the protection of the most vulnerable groups.

Also, from April of last year to date, more than 530,000 measles vaccines have been administered as part of ongoing prevention efforts.

These achievements have been possible thanks to a functional and monitored State cold chain, as well as coordination between ISAPEG, IMSS, ISSSTE and the education sector, in addition to territorial planning with specific goals per municipality.

These actions strengthen herd immunity, reduce the risk of epidemic outbreaks, and especially protect children and vulnerable groups.

Maintaining high vaccination coverage means taking care of our children, preventing diseases, and strengthening the well-being of the entire population. For this reason, Guanajuato will continue working to ensure that vaccines reach every community in the State in a timely manner.
