Guanajuato increases Mezcal Designation of Origin

Comonfort, Dolores Hidalgo, San Jose Iturbide and Tierra Blanca obtain official recognition to produce mezcal with designation of origin

Guanajuato continues to consolidate itself as a national benchmark in the production of mezcal, after the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) granted the Mezcal Designation of Origin to the municipalities of Comonfort, Dolores Hidalgo, San José Iturbide and Tierra Blanca, a historic achievement resulting from the coordinated work of the State Government and the municipalities of Guanajuato.

The People’s Governor, Libia Dennise Garcia Munoz Ledo, has promoted a strategy to strengthen regional productive vocations, protect the identity of Guanajuatense products, and generate new economic opportunities for the families of Guanajuato.

The modification to the General Declaration of Protection of the Designation of Origin “Mezcal” was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) on May 20, 2026, formalizing the expansion of the protected geographical area of ​​this designation in Guanajuato.

With this resolution issued by IMPI, the municipalities of Comonfort, Dolores Hidalgo, San Jose Iturbide and Tierra Blanca join San Felipe and San Luis de la Paz, which already had this recognition since 2001 and 2015, respectively.

The expansion of the Mezcal Designation of Origin represents a strategic advance for Guanajuato, as it legally protects the origin and authenticity of mezcal produced in these regions, strengthens its national and international positioning, and opens new marketing and export opportunities for local producers.

In addition to the cultural and tourism impact, this incorporation will trigger significant economic benefits for the regions involved, by promoting new production chains related to agave cultivation, distillation, marketing, packaging, tourism and services.

The inclusion of these four municipalities will strengthen the Mezcal Route in Guanajuato, generate greater added value to local agro-industrial production and expand the State’s exportable supply, consolidating mezcal as an industry with a regional vocation and high growth potential.

The Designation of Origin also represents an opportunity to boost employment, encourage the participation of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as preserve traditions and knowledge that are part of the cultural heritage of Guanajuato.
