The collaboration with Arizona State University opens opportunities to develop specialized talent, strengthen research, and connect the State’s technological capabilities with the industry of the future

Guanajuato wants new generations to have opportunities to work in the industries of the future, with more specialized jobs, better development prospects and access to cutting-edge technology.

To advance this goal, the People’s Government, led by Governor Libia Dennise Garcia Munoz Ledo, established an alliance with Arizona State University (ASU), the most recognized institution in the United States for its technological innovation.

This alliance represents a strategic step for the State to move beyond traditional manufacturing and strengthen its capabilities in areas such as microelectronics, integrated circuit design, engineering, materials and advanced technologies, sectors that will be key to North America’s industrial competitiveness.

As part of this agenda, from October 28 to 30, the Governor received a delegation from Arizona State University, headed by James O’Brien, Senior Vice President for University Affairs and Chief of Staff to the President of the institution.

During the visit, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the State Government and ASU, establishing the basis for promoting collaborative projects in semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, the automotive industry and mobility, as well as strengthening supply chains, identifying technological and talent capabilities, and promoting exchanges, training and spaces for dialogue between the academic, business and government sectors.

ASU has ranked first in innovation among U.S. universities for twelve consecutive years, and has specialized capabilities in electrical engineering, materials science, microelectronics, and semiconductor-related technologies.

One of the aspects that makes this collaboration strategic is that Guanajuato is not starting from scratch. The State has institutions, projects, and infrastructure that are laying the groundwork for developing knowledge, research, and talent in various areas of the semiconductor value chain.

Guanajuato is making progress with the B-CHIPS program, an initiative that brings together the Secretary of Education of Guanajuato (SEG), the Center for Engineering and Industrial Development (CIDESI), higher education institutions and actors specialized in electronic design.

Key achievements include training teachers in chip design, assembly, and testing, as well as the production of a multi-project silicon wafer containing approximately 200 integrated circuits. This work contributes to developing talent and expanding the State’s capabilities in microelectronics.

This effort is complemented by the infrastructure and experience of institutions such as the Center for Electronic Design and Integrated Circuits (CEDECI), focused on electronic design and specialized training; the State Institute of Training (IECA), dedicated to technical training; and the Center for Optical Research (CIO), with experience in research, optics and photonics.

The State is making progress in linking education institutions, research centers and specialized infrastructure to connect scientific development and talent training with the technological demands of industry.
