The Secretary for Migrants and International Affairs remains in a state of alert because of the heavy rains that have kept the state of California under water for two weeks.
Juan Hernandez, head of the SMEI, said that the instruction of Governor Diego Sinhue Rodriguez Vallejo is to maintain close communication with the Mexican and North American authorities, through the consulates to offer Guanajuato migrants the support they need in this case.
“For now, we do not know of any Guanajuatense that requires our support, but we are in communication with our office in Los Angeles, with the Mexican consulate in Los Angeles and our clubs of migrants” said Hernandez.
The Secretary said that the US Federal and State Governments have already provided refugee and shelters for the millions of residents who were on alert for flooding in:
- California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Utah, Arizona and Wyoming
Also for the almost 50,000 people who received evacuation orders and more than 110,000 homes and businesses that, since Tuesday, had been without electricity due to heavy rains, lightning, hailstorms, and landslides.
“What we do know is that there are a minimum of 18 people who have died, according to the Los Angeles Consulate, it appears that there have been none from Guanajuato”, said Hernandez.
The head of SMEI reported that in California, according to the last census of the National Population Council, CONAPO there are around 350,000 Guanajuatenses and there are 91 clubs of migrants from Guanajuato.
He said flood watches continue and cover mainly northern and central California, in the counties of:
- El Dorado, Monterey, Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, Alameda, Montecito, parts of Santa Barbara, Sacramento, Summerland, North Bay and Redding
More than 12 millimeters of rain are expected to fall per hour in the afternoons in this area, according to the Meteorological Prediction Center.
