Governor presents proposals for collaboration to reaffirm the 10-year-old bilateral relationship with Hiroshima

Hiroshima/Gto News

“Hiroshima and Guanajuato are driven by the same values, our hardworking people who always seek to go on,” said the Governor of the People, Libia Dennise Garcia Munoz Ledo, to Hiroshima Governor Hidehiko Yuzaki.

On this second day of activities of her working tour of Japan, the Governor of Guanajuato held a reunion with Governor Hidehiko Yuzaki, during which the People’s Government presented a broader cooperation agenda to the Hiroshima government, including proposals in the areas of economy, tourism, and culture to strengthen strategic ties and position Guanajuato and Hiroshima as leaders in cultural, economic, and tourism innovation.

“Today we want to reaffirm this friendship, which will be celebrating its 11th anniversary this year, and we want it to continue for many more years,” said the Governor.

Among the proposals put forward by the Secretary of Economy, Claudia Cristina Villasenor Aguilar, are:

  • Hiroshima-Guanajuato Supplier Fair, for the integration of Global Value Chains . This fair will feature supplier needs assessments, matchmaking with potential Guanajuatense companies, and technical business roundtables. Prioritizing local economic development.
  • International Internship Program in Hiroshima for Guanajuato graduates. The goal is to connect young talents from Guanajuato with Japanese companies in Hiroshima through scholarships that support internships of 6 to 12 months, strengthening their technical training and employability in strategic sectors.
  • Japan-Mexico Microcredentials Platform. Short specialized training courses will be developed, co-designed with Japanese companies, to strengthen technical skills required in both markets.
  • Guanajuato-Hiroshima Business Bridge. Guanajuato companies with export or investment potential in Asia will be identified, with a focus on Hiroshima.
  • Sustainable Smart Cities Program. Best practices, technologies, and policies related to smart cities, such as electric mobility, clean energy, and environmental management, will be exchanged.

The head of the Guanajuato Economy also proposed creating a Business Opportunities Platform and a Bilateral Business Laboratory.

In cultural matters, Secretary Lizeth Galvan Cortes presented the Guanajuato-Hiroshima Creation Platform to promote technical and creative exchange between artists, facilitate residencies focused on artistic production and technical improvement, and provide access to workshops, studios, and creative spaces in both territories.

This platform also includes:

  • Biennale for Arts and Crafts
  • Biennale for Cultural Cuisine
  • The Mazda Design Award
  • Graphic Design Workshop inspired by Arroyo Seco cave art

To promote tourism exchange, Maria Guadalupe Robles Leon, Secretary of Tourism and Identity, presented a program of actions to strengthen the twinning relationship between Guanajuato and Hiroshima.

The program includes seven lines of action:

  • Exchange between the traditional cuisines of Hiroshima and Guanajuato
  • Exchange between Japan and Guanajuato for the promotion of wine
  • Model of attention and service to Japanese tourists, as well as a program of academic exchange and tourism training
  • Cross-media sharing campaign and promotional outreach channels for tourism, collaborative investment
  • Plan to participate in fairs, exhibitions, and activations in Guanajuato
  • Organization of roadshows, tourism seminars and trade missions
  • Exchange of best practices for Tourism Observatories

“We are very happy to be in Hiroshima. We know that the relationship we have with Japan, but especially with Hiroshima, goes beyond a commercial relationship. It is a brotherhood, and that’s how we feel about the entire Japanese community living in Guanajuato,” the Governor emphasized.

The Governor participated in the Flower Parade, where she had the opportunity to walk through the streets of Hiroshima and greet its people up close. At the end of the tour, the Floral Laying took place at the Memorial Monument in memory of the victims of the atomic bomb, where the Governor presented drawings alluding to peace that the children of the Centennial of the 1917 Constitution Elementary School submitted as a sign of respect and love for the people of Hiroshima and its history.

Guanajuato was present in this parade with a stand showcasing folk art, tradition, and creativity. Decorative walls and crafts representative of the state were displayed. The public also enjoyed ‘cartoneria’ workshops taught by master craftsman Osvaldo Ruelas Ramirez, originally from Salamanca.

Later, Libia Dennise met with students from Guanajuato studying in Japan: Gerardo Cruz and Ximena Alvarez are in their second year at the Hiroshima Global Academy; Isai Espinoza is a first-year student at the Graduate School of Advanced Science and Technology at Hiroshima University; and Claudia Nunez is a first-year student at the Faculty of Health Sciences at Shudo University in Hiroshima.

The exhibition “The Landscape and Tradition of Guanajuato” is opened

Later, at the Hiroshima Prefectural Cultural Center, the Governor inaugurated the art exhibition “The Landscape and Tradition of Guanajuato.” Forty works showcase Guanajuato’s rich artistic and heritage patrimony.

The exhibition will be open to the public from May 5 to 9. The exhibition features works by artists Jose Julio Rodriguez, Jose Chavez Morado, Feliciano Pena, Olga Costa, Diego Rivera, Norma Carmona, Jesus Gallardo, Luis Garcia Guerrero, and Leopoldo Gottlieb.

To finish the day, Libia Dennise participated in a dinner with Hiroshima Governor Yuzaki and Takashi Nakamoto, President of the Hiroshima Prefectural Assembly and President of the Hiroshima-Guanajuato Friendship Association.

“Today we had the opportunity to visit the Peace Museum with great respect and learn about the history of Hiroshima through these images and stories that touch our hearts. Visiting this museum allows us to realize what humankind can do over the years, for better and for worse, the construction of war, and on the other hand, we can leave this museum and see this wonderful city, full of strong, courageous people who knew how to rise up and build this great city of Hiroshima,” the Governor said.

Currently, more than 2,100 Japanese citizens reside in Guanajuato, mainly in the municipalities of the industrial corridor. In 2016, the Consulate General of Japan opened in Leon, covering six states, demonstrating the importance of the bilateral relationship.
