“Every corner of Guanajuato evokes wonderful things, and the history of a city like this, a Capital like ours, could not be understood without the Estudiantina of the University of Guanajuato,” said the Governor of the People, Libia Dennise Garcia Munoz Ledo, at the ceremony declaring the Estudiantina of the University of Guanajuato as Intangible Cultural Heritage of the State of Guanajuato.

This historic moment was framed on the emblematic steps of the UG, where the Constitutional Governor of the State, Libia Dennise Garcia Munoz Ledo, signed this government decree, representing the people of Guanajuato.

“When one closes the eyes and thinks of this capital city, the sounds, dances, and colorful displays of our Estudiantina musical groups will always come to mind,” said the State Governor.

By being considered Intangible Cultural Heritage, the UG Student Bands will be protected for future generations, explained Libia Dennise, “because we want to continue listening to their songs and we want to continue seeing how they spread that joy.”

During this ceremony, the Governor of the People presented an award to Joaquin “El Flaco” Arias Espinosa, whose vision and dedication gave rise to a musical tradition that is part of the identity of our State, as he was the founder and director of the UG Estudiantina.

“His legacy lives on in every generation of student musical groups, in every alleyway filled with music, and in every chord that projects the festive university spirit of Guanajuato,” said the Governor.

Governor Libia Dennise and the personalities with her walked to the Juarez Theater, with the UG Estudiantina following in their footsteps and singing the songs they have made famous.

From this venue, the Governor acknowledged the vision and passion of those who, more than six decades ago, planted an artistic project that transcended the university sphere to become a cultural ambassador of Guanajuato in Mexico and the world.
