SSG urges the population to reinforce prevention measures amid low temperatures

Guanajuato/Gto News

The State Health Department urges the population of the 46 municipalities to reinforce preventive measures at home due to the low temperatures.

The cold weather is approaching, and according to the National Water Commission (CONAGUA) and Civil Protection, the 2025-2026 low temperature season is already here and brings winds, intense cold and even frost in some areas.

The Secretary of Health, Gabriel Cortes Alcala, reported that the priority is to take care of the health of your family, especially those who are most vulnerable: children, and the elderly.

Another danger during the cold season is hypothermia, which occurs when the body temperature drops below 35°C due to prolonged exposure to the cold.

The warning signs are:

  • Very intense body tremors
  • Confusion, disorientation, and drowsiness
  • Slow breathing

The Guanajuato Health Secretary urges everyone to follow these basic and effective recommendations to protect those you love most:

  • Dress in layers: wear several layers of clothing and closed shoes.
  • Don’t forget a hat, gloves, and scarf
  • Avoid sudden changes: move slowly from a hot place to a cold one, and vice versa
  • Drink hot liquids: consume hot beverages and stay well hydrated
  • Eat well: include foods rich in vitamin C (citrus fruits, guavas, etc.)
  • Keep enclosed spaces ventilated for at least 15 minutes a day
  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough
  • If you have symptoms, do not self-medicate. Go to your nearest Community Health Center

To prevent poisonings and household accidents, remember:

  • Do not use braziers, wood stoves or charcoal grills to heat your home
  • Always ensure adequate ventilation: if you use a heater, always maintain proper ventilation (an open window)
  • Never start cars or engines in enclosed spaces such as garages
  • Do not allow children to play near the stove or kitchen areas
  • Protects electrical contacts and cables

An invisible enemy in the winter season is carbon monoxide poisoning.

Poisoning is a dangerous and potentially fatal risk. It occurs when we use combustion methods inside the house without ventilation (such as braziers, charcoal grills, wood stoves, or old gas heaters).

It’s important to be careful, as its symptoms can be confused with the flu:

  • Headache or dizziness
  • Weakness or confusion
  • Nausea
