With a mechanism of open participation and plurality of opinions, the public hearing of the Presidential Commission for Electoral Reform was held in the Mateo Herrera Auditorium of the Museum of Art and History of Guanajuato, headed by the secretary of the Agency for Digital Transformation and Telecommunications (ATDT), Jose Antonio Pena Merino and organized by the State of Guanajuato, headed by the governor, Libia Dennise Garcia Munoz Ledo, and the collaboration of the University of Guanajuato.

At the opening ceremony, attended by approximately 250 people and including the Secretary General of the University of Guanajuato, Salvador Hernandez Castro, Jose Merino noted the participation of a “broad, diverse, and inclusive group” reflecting the spirit of pluralism inherent in this initiative, which aims to listen to all voices.

“Today, at this Public Hearing, we celebrate Guanajuato as the host city, this land where the diversity of ideas does not divide, but strengthens. We always celebrate the points of convergence that allow us to dialogue and build from Guanajuato. I invite you to send the country a message of unity and pluralism. We may think differently, but we share the same commitment and love for Mexico and for democracy,” said Governor Libia Dennise.

After thanking the governor and the University of Guanajuato for their support, Jose Merino indicated that these hearings gather concerns and proposals, but also emphasized that anyone can exercise their right to have their opinion heard on the commission’s website https://www.reformaelectoral.gob.mx/ where they can upload a proposal, idea or concern.

The speakers talked about a new voting system, the recall of elected officials, unrestricted independent candidacies, mechanisms to combat gender-based political violence, and the need to implement preventative measures, especially in the digital sphere; as well as legislative representation under a fairer system.

They also presented their ideas on the obligations and responsibilities of migrant deputies and senators, the role of electoral authorities in local elections, and the integration of popular representation bodies, among other topics.

This exercise in citizen participation can be followed on the Electoral Reform Platform in the portal https://www.reformaelectoral.gob.mx/.
