Eight years after its inauguration, the Hermenegildo Bustos Museum commemorates its anniversary as a space dedicated to the memory, art, and identity of Purisima del Rincon, a city that proudly bears the name of the painter who put it on the map of Mexican art.
“The Hermenegildo Bustos Museum is much more than an artistic venue; it’s a space where the history, tradition, and talent of community that lives on in every stroke of the painter’s work. Celebrating its eighth anniversary is a recognition of the cultural richness of Purisima and the value of preserving the memory of those who proudly represent us both in Mexico and abroad,” said Lizeth Galven Cortes.
Inaugurated on August 8, 2017, the museum is located in a historic building dating back to 1862, which was once a cemetery and later a public school. Today, its interior houses the legacy of Hermenegildo Bustos, a self-taught 19th-century artist renowned for his unique ability to portray the people of the Bajio region with a unique sensitivity, capturing not only physical features but also the soul of his subjects.
Art critic Raquel Tibol dubbed him “The People’s Painter,” a title that does justice to the emotional power of his small portraits, which compel the viewer to stop, look closer, and discover, in each stroke, a fragment of everyday life in the heart of Mexico.
One of the museum’s most notable features is its connection to La Judea, a centuries-old tradition that Hermenegildo Bustos helped consolidate and which is celebrated every Holy Week at Purisima del Rincon. The original masks used in this performance, as well as a mural by the Leones painter Jesus Gallardo, are part of the museum’s collection, reinforcing its role as custodian of the municipality’s living cultural expressions.
For these eight years, the Hermenegildo Bustos Museum has not only preserved the artistic legacy of its illustrious countryman, but has also brought his work to national and international audiences through traveling exhibitions that highlight the relevance of his vision: a blend of the local and the universal, the humble and the transcendent.
As part of its eighth anniversary celebration, the museum prepared a special program that began on August 8 with a performance by the LaSalle Bajio University Orchestra at 6:00 p.m.
The program continues on August 14 with the presentation of t5he book “Pre-Hispanic Settlements in the Towns of Rincon,” by Jose de Jesus Verdin Saldana at 4:00 p.m.
On August 15, at 4:00 p.m., the lecture “The Early Years of the Town of Nuestra Senora de la Limpia Concepcion del Rincon” will be given by history master’s student David Osvaldo Pena Gomez.
Today, the museum continues its work as a space for education, heritage, and art, reaffirming the value of Hermenegildo Bustos as an essential artist for understanding Mexico’s visual history.
