The upcoming solar eclipse on April 8 offers an exciting opportunity to connect with history and nature in the archaeological zones of Canada de la Virgen, El Coporo and Plazuelas in Guanajuato.

Besides offering an incomparable setting for observing this phenomenon, the archaeological sites run by the State Institute of Culture have prepared a special program with planetarium functions and workshops, where the whole family can learn more about the solar system, history of eclipses and the cultural importance of these events for various civilizations throughout history.

In the archaeological zone of El Coporo, in the municipality of Ocampo, staff from the Wigberto Jimenez Moreno State Central Library +offer workshops to make a paper model of the eclipse and clay solar seals with Mesoamerican motifs. There will also be projections on its mobile planetary dome, where you can enjoy fascinating visual representations of the cosmos.

Plazuelas, in Penjamo, will host a couple of workshops where visitors will be able to make a dark chamber for indirect observation of the eclipse, from a cardboard box and make relief drawings on stone, in the manner of the petroglyphs present in this archaeological area.

The recommendations for visitors are:

  • Avoid looking directly at the sun
  • Use special lenses or a dark chamber
  • Wear a cap, hat and comfortable shoes
  • Constantly hydrate
  • Follow the instructions of authorized personnel

Only the three archaeological sites mentioned will open in a special schedule this Monday starting at 10:00 in the morning. The access limit time will be, as usual, at 4:00 p.m.

The recovery fees are:

  • $90 pesos adults and $25 pesos, minors, in Canada de la Virgen
  • $65 pesos adults and $20 pesos minors, in El Coporo and Plazuelas
