At the 63rd Ordinary Session of CUPIA, UVEG promotes the education of the future with micro-credentials

Ensenada, Baja California/Gto News

The Virtual University of the State of Guanajuato (UVEG) reaffirms its commitment to the transformation of higher education by participating as an active member of the National Association of Universities and Higher Education Institutions (ANUIES) in the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Council of Public Universities and Related Institutions (CUPIA), held at the Autonomous University of Baja California, Ensenada Campus.

In this strategic space, UVEG joined the national dialogue that focuses on new flexible learning models, such as micro-credentials and professional retraining, positioned as a major contribution to addressing the challenges facing higher education in Mexico.

The event was attended by the Federal Undersecretary of Public Higher Education, Ricardo Villanueva Lomeli, who noted that the current challenge is to innovate and take advantage of the non-school sector, an area where public universities have vast potential to develop.

Villanueva noted that in Mexico, more people are enrolled in Coursera -the global online learning platform- courses (6.7 million) than in universities (5.4 million), which highlights the urgent need to reconfigure education paths and adapt them to new social and labor demands.

Microcredentials, focused on specialized, short, and quickly applicable content, represent a key solution for bringing knowledge to more people, with highly sought-after courses such as accounting for non-accountants, personal finance, and algebra.

UVEG, as a pioneering institution in 100% online education, is already working on integrating micro-credentials into its education model, promoting personalized, accessible learning paths aligned with the demands of today’s labor market.

In the session also discussed were topics such as:

  • Education in binational contexts
  • Good healthy living practices
  • Accountability in state-run public universities
  • Promotion of the 2025 international agenda

UC San Diego’s binational “Enlace” program was also highlighted as a bridge for scientific collaboration between Mexico and the United States.

As part of the Council’s decisions, Damaso Leonardo Anaya Alvarado was elected vice president of CUPIA’s 63rd Ordinary Session, and the Autonomous University of Tamaulipas was designated as the venue for the next session, to be held on October 17, 2025.

From its role at ANUIES, UVEG continues to promote innovation in education and reaffirms its vision for the future: to build, together with other universities, a national platform for high-quality courses that will democratize access to knowledge and prepare new generations for a constantly changing world, where 63% of today’s students will pursue professions that don’t yet exist.
