The new edition of “Hermenegildo Bustos. Pintor de Pueblo”, the landmark book by Raquel Tibol that contributed widely to the projection of the great artist from Guanajuato, was presented during the 34th Leon National Book Fair, as part of the literary program prepared by Ediciones La Rana.
The volume, which had previously been presented at the Guadalajara International Book Fair and the Palacio de Mineria International Book Fair, was shown to the Leonese public with comments by Mauricio Vazquez, director of Ediciones La Rana, and J. de Jesus Verdin, chronicler of San Francisco del Rincon and a renowned researcher on the figure and work of Bustos.
Mauricio Vazquez recalled that the original edition of “Hermenegildo Bustos. People’s Painter”, dates from 1981 and was the first art book produced by the former State Government publishing house, the predecessor of the current La Rana Editions of the State Institute of Culture. It was only the third biography written by Raquel Tibol -1923-2015-, perhaps the greatest art critic in Mexico, after the ones she dedicated to David Alfaro Siqueiros and Diego Rivera.
The volume has great relevance in the history of Mexican art, as it was the most important publication on Bustos at the time. Five years later, the essay that Octavio Paz dedicated to the artist would appear, first in the magazine Vuelta and then in the book “Los privilegios de la vista” and which in 1995 would be the basis for Franco Maria Ricci’s glamorous Italian edition on the genius from Purisima. .
Vazquez made it clear that he is not simply presenting a reprint of the volume that Raquel Tibol published in the eighties, but a new edition, with a renewed editorial design.
“Raquel Tibol’s original text is fully respected, as it is her curatorship of the works included in the graphic section”, said Vázquez.
In his speech, J. de Jesus Verdin recalled the characters that began the study and rescue of the figure of Hermenegildo Bustos, whose work served as a source for Raquel Tibol, such as Francisco Orozco Munoz, his first collector, and Pasucal Aceves Barajas, who in the fifties published the biography “Hermenegildo Bustos. His life and his work.”
“Raquel Tibol also did extensive consulting work in the parish archives to contextualize the town and the environment in which Bustos lived and worked. He rebuts Gonzalo Obregon by considering that there is no documentary basis to affirm that the Purisimense painter was a student of the Leonese teacher Juan Nepomuceno Herrera”, said Verdin.
The appearance of “Hermenegildo Bustos. People’s Painter”, completes a publishing venture of the State Institute of Culture that also includes the publication of “Altenos y abajenos en la pintora de Hermenegildo Bustos”, by J. de Jesus Verdin and the reissue of “Hermengildo Bustos. His life and his work”, by Pascual Aceves Barajas. It also anticipates the centenary of Raquel Tibol, which is in December.
