Leon/Gto News

Apaseo el Alto is preparing to welcome more than 16,000 visitors at the 9th Pomegranate and Pitahaya Fair, an event that boosts the local economy, strengthens cultural identity, and projects the municipality’s agricultural wealth nationally and internationally, in collaboration with the Secretary of Tourism and Identity of the People’s Government.

The municipality is recognized as one of Mexico’s leading pomegranate producers, thanks to its endemic “Apaseo” variety, prized for its sweetness, glossy grain, and small pit, ideal for iconic dishes like chiles en nogada. Similarly, in recent years, the municipality has excelled in the production of pitahaya, the country’s most profitable fruit, with a quality superior to that of other Latin American production and already successfully exported to Canada, the United States, and Germany, reported Mayor Monserrat Mendoza Cano.

During the fair, a Producers’ Forum will be held to promote the marketing of the fruits and fruit products, there will also be culinary and children’s competitions; the 3rd Granada Athletic Race will promote sports and healthy living, as well as cultural and artistic events, including concerts.

There will be an artisan and gastronomic exhibition featuring producers from Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala, Puebla, and Queretaro, and agrotourism tours of local orchards of both fruits that give color and flavor to the municipality.

Attendees will be able to taste and purchase products such as creams, ointments, juices, liqueurs, vinegars, jams, sauces, ice creams, wines, and baked goods made with pomegranate flour, as well as local handicrafts.

This fair is possible thanks to the support of the Guanajuato State Government, through the Secretary of Tourism and Identity, the Secretary of Economy, and the Secretary of Agriculture, as well as the collaboration of producers, artisans, and the Apaseoaltense community.
