Governor of Guanajuato, Diego Sinhue Rodriguez Vallejo, led the opening ceremony of the 51st Edition of the International Cervantino Festival.
The Governor welcomed the 2,500 artists from 31 countries who will perform in 108 shows with the best of dance, music, theater and visual arts from October 13 to 29.
Rodríguez Vallejo also welcomed the United States of America, the Country guest of honor. “Our relationship of friendship and work has united us more as partner countries; and this relationship continues to grow”, he said.
“In the United States there is a large community of Guanajuatenses who are hard-working and honest people, who contribute their talent and ability to both countries. And here in Guanajuato, in San Miguel de Allende, we have a large American community,” said the Governor.
And the most important thing, he added, is that the bicentennial of diplomatic relations between both countries is being celebrated. “Thank you very much to the United States of America for being at this great party. Thank you, Ambassador Ken Salazar.”
The Governor also welcomed Sonora, the State guest of honor. A State that is also a leader in various topics, but above all with a great cultural heritage and an extraordinary history full of folklore and traditions.
And all that rich cultural and artistic legacy of Sonora is now with us at the Cervantino International Festival. “Many thanks to the Governor of Sonora, for bringing us the best of his state without sparing efforts to project their art and culture,” said Rodriguez Vallejo.
The Governor of Guanajuato, presented the Cervantino Prize to Gijsbertus De Graaf Van Doesburg, master harpsichord maker, oboist and trainer of great musicians.
De Graaf is a living heritage for preserving the wisdom of those who transform wood and metal into exceptional instruments. Although he was born in the Netherlands, he has lived in Mexico since 1966, and with great honor he was a member of the Symphony Orchestra of the University of Guanajuato, said the Governor.
Also, the Cervantino Prize was awarded to the sisters Maria and Tolita Figueroa, who have been designing costumes and sets for theater, dance, opera, cinema and multimedia for 33 years, with many national and international awards.
The Governor presented the Eugenio Trueba Prize to Los Juglares de Guanajuato.
Rodriguez Vallejo also recognized photojournalist Gerardo Garcia Ramirez for his outstanding and dedicated work in the media for 41 years, in which he has covered the Festival.
Diego Sinhue Rodriguez Vallejo unveiled the inaugural plaque of the Collection of the Cervantino International Festival –FIC- in the house where the Guanajuato writer Emma Godoy was born; the exhibitions of the State Institute of Culture -IEC- were presented there.
“It is a great project of more than half a century of Cervantino history; We must give a long life to this file,” said the Governor.
As the opening event of the Cervantino International Festival, “Broadway goes to Hollywood” was presented, an exciting and dynamic selection of popular hits from classic Broadway and Hollywood musicals, reinterpreted with a modern sound by a stellar cast of singers and artists with great experience.
