After a comprehensive intervention that lasted almost 20 months, the Teatro Juarez in Guanajuato reopens its doors to the public this October 6, with a performance by the Symphony Orchestra of the University of Guanajuato and the Choir of the Bicentennial Theater.
The emblematic Guanajuato colosseum will nod to its origins, presenting the same musical work that graced its opening night 120 years ago: the opera “Aida”, by Giuseppe Verdi, now offered in a concert version with the participation as soloists by Maria Katzarava, Rosa Munoz and Octavio Rivas.
It will be the first night that the Juarez Theater uses its new universal accessibility solutions, such as an elevator, stair lift and a box enabled with spaces for wheelchairs; which were part of the renovations inside.
The public will also be able to appreciate the intensive restoration that was carried out in the foyer and the boudoir and smoking rooms on the upper floor; with which cracks were corrected and ornamental elements were recovered. The original colors were also recovered on the interior walls and the painting of the Santa Fe on the staircase of honor was restored.
Previously, during the International Cervantino Festival last year and after the first stage of the intervention, the Juarez premiered theatrical mechanics and a lighting system based on LED technology. It also had its stage garments and acoustic shell renewed. These technical adaptations are now added to its closed circuit television and new voice and data systems; in addition to renovations of electrical, sanitary and fire premises.
More than 120 artists on stage will participate in the opera concert “Aida”, with which Juárez opens this new era. The original composition by Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) is one of the most admired in the world’s lyrical repertoire. It was premiered in 1871, at the peak of its author’s career.
“Aida” will resonate in Juarez as an opera concert under the direction of Roberto Beltran-Zavala, head of the OSUG, in front of whom one of the most appreciated Mexican bel canto performers will sing: Maria Katzarava, winner of Operalia 2008 and who gave life to the Ethiopian princess in the Bicentennial Theater’s production of this opera at the beginning of the year.
The seats for the concert have been sold out for a few weeks, but music lovers will be able to enjoy it through the live broadcast of TV4 and Radio Universidad de Guanajuato.
