On the 213 Anniversary of the taking of the Alhondiga the ceremony takes place for the 200 years of Guanajuato as a Federative, Free and Sovereign State

“Today Guanajuato vibrates strongly, like 213 years ago. With passion and patriotism. Because the renewal of the symbolic fire calls us not to forget the heroic deeds of the women and men who gave us our Homeland”, said the Governor of Guanajuato, Diego Sinhue Rodriguez Vallejo, when presiding over the ceremony of Renewal of the Symbolic Fire of Independence.

The ceremony commemorates the 213th anniversary of the Taking of the Alhondiga de Granaditas by the Insurgent Army commanded by the priest Don Miguel Hidalgo and Costilla on September 28, 1810.
“More than two centuries ago, fire was necessary to burn down a symbol of power that kept Mexicans oppressed. In the fire that we renew today, we seek its light to reaffirm our identity and our sense of belonging to this blessed land,” said the Governor.
Prior to the Ceremony of the Symbolic Fire of Independence, Governor Diego Sinhue, accompanied by the authorities, participated in the traditional Civic-Military Parade and advanced from the Garden of Ambassadors to the Palace of Powers Museum.
The families of the capital, as they do every year, watched with joy and jubilation the passage of contingents, made up of students from public and private schools, officials from the three levels of government, as well as public security corporations, civil associations and charros.
Upon arriving at the former State Congress, Rodriguez Vallejo went up to the balcony of the building to observe the participants passing by.
Later, for the first time, the Governor joined the parade again, riding his horse and with the typical charro attire, to ride to the Alhondiga de Granaditas and lead the Symbolic Fire ceremony.
This ceremony occurs as part of the celebrations for the 200 years of Guanajuato as a Federative, Free and Sovereign Entity.
Today we also remember the bravery of Juan Jose de Los Reyes Martinez Amaro “El Pipila”, who with a stone carried on his back and armed with tar, oil and ocotes, burned the access door to the Alhondiga, which allowed the entry of the Insurgent Army and the defeat of Mayor Juan Antonio Riano and his 600 armed men. The entrance was free, Hidalgo’s troops entered the Alhondiga de Granaditas.
Although the fight for the consummation of national independence would take 11 years, it was in Guanajuato where the fuse of that fire of freedom that is renewed today was lit.
“We are Guanajuatenses, people who grow in the face of adversity; with ideals of freedom, justice and democracy, which have marked the history of Mexico,” said the Governor.
The Symbolic Fire of Independence represents the memory of the heroic acts that all the insurgents performed during the independence struggle to consolidate Mexico as an independent nation.
This fire was fueled on December 20, 1823, when Guanajuato was proclaimed a Free and Sovereign State, an event of which we are about to celebrate the first 200 years.
“In Guanajuato the flame of education and innovation burns in our schools, in our universities, in our research centers, in our companies. Today we tell Mexico and the world that in Guanajuato the fire of freedom and democracy continues to burn; a fire of justice and participation,” said the Governor.
Along with Guanajuato, 18 other states are the founders of the Mexican nation: State of Mexico, Oaxaca, Puebla, Michoacan, San Luis Potosi, Veracruz, Yucatan, Jalisco, Zacatecas, Queretaro, Sonora and Sinaloa, Tabasco, Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon, Coahuila and Texas, Durango, Chihuahua, and Chiapas.
